Peter Bankes- QPR v Leeds
« on: Sun 19 Jan 2020 12:12 »
I'm surprised no-one has commented on this game. I didn't watch it so can't comment on his overall performance, but there were three major incidents.

The first one was the goal scored by Wells. It came from a free kick and the ball was deflected on to one of his arms and he then advanced the ball with the other before scoring. The first one was clearly accidental, although would cause the goal to be disallowed under the current Law, but the second seemed more deliberate and would have probably merited a free-kick under the old law. None of the officials saw either, for which they will probably be marked down, but it shows how difficult the current handball law is to officiate without VAR.

The second was a penalty to Leeds that was given and then saved. At first glance Bamford appeared to be brought down by the QPR goalkeeper, but replays showed that there was no contact. I think Mr. Bamford may be hearing from the FA this week.

The final one was a red card to Phillips. It was a late and dangerous tackle and Mr. Bankes was totally correct to produce the red.

So some interesting points to consider there.

There is comment on the handballs but on the VAR thread.

I thought there was some contact by the QPR goalie and that the Leeds penalty was correctly awarded. I would need to look at the incident again before being convinced otherwise.

Surely the question you should be asking is not was there any contact but did the goalkeeper foul a player noted for cheating ?
