I know that Bobby Madley is anxious to claw his way back on to the Premier League list but having just watched 45 mins of the Hull c v Wigan Ath game I am afraid that could be a long way off. Awful performance from Madley. I'm sure he must improve in the 2nd half. He couldnt be any worse.

I for one sincerely hope the F A don’t fall for this and bend any rules to get him back on the PL. He was vastly overrated in the first place and came across as arrogant, which I suspect may have had some bearing on the offence which saw him banned. He turned his back on this country to set up home with his Norwegian girlfriend and try his luck in that country, only to return here to try and re- establish  his career.
There are plenty of other refs, hard grafters, who deserve a chance of promotion if good enough. Madley should be given no favours or special treatment and only promoted on merit. From Barneys report that would seem a long way off. What would really p*** me off would be for the F A to fast track him to the PL and then offer him his FIFA place again at the detriment of some other more deserving referee.

I certainly agree that he should not be fast tracked unless of course his performances merit a meteoric rise. That would be very unfair on others who have been developing in his absence.

I do think it is unfair to say that he turned his back on his country. Whether we agree or disagree with his sacking he was left, very much overnight, without a career. I don't think one can blame him for following an opportunity that could have put him on a path to reach top level refereeing in Norway and I can certainly understand why he would want to have a change of scenery given the very public nature of his dismissal (not to mention his partner being Norwegian).

These are all very fair points I think. I suspect there are quite a few others in front of him in the queue for SG1 and FIFA status. Is it known why he did not pursue his Norwegian path and came back to the UK ?

Yes, it is. He was open about it when he left us here in Oslo. But I think I'll leave it with that. There are definately not any exciting secrets there.

H???

I had assumed that he moved back as he had been given a place on the national list in England while he was lower down the pyramid in Norway.

Totally unscientific, I know, and in the absence of any further explanation from the opening poster, I notice he was given 8/10 in the Football League Paper for yesterday's game...

I'm going to defend Bobby here.  We are not friends, but we are acquaintances.  If we see each other we will have a natter and a cuppa but neither of us would go out of the way to pick up a phone to just say hi how are you kind of thing.  He is far from arrogant. When Jr was still refereeing Bobby was one who had a lot to do with him, coaching, mentoring, giving him advice, listening to him when he just wanted someone to talk to.  Despite it being a very long drive home from Bournemouth, if Jr wanted to talk for 2 hours, Bobby would sit and talk to him for that long. When Bobby found out Jr had been racially abused when refereeing he was absolutely mortified and wanted to know what, if anything, he could do to help a very distressed at the time jr.  The shock & hurt was written all over his face, it was genuine - he couldn't hide it. Bobby I mean. They had a lot of email exchanges and he was always very supportive. Even after Jr decided he was not going to referee anymore as a result of it, the support was still there, encouraging him to work hard in school and to behave himself. Years later he was delighted with GCSE results, A level results and jr getting into uni. I followed him on Twitter when he was on there & he was always encouraging towards referees on there, talking listening, offering advice, trying to help them learn and grow. He comes across as a thoroughly decent guy and always seems to have all the time in the world to talk about football and refereeing in general as well as offer his support to others.

In terms of his refereeing I was never a fan. Wigan away FA cup before the glory days and Wigan still being a big team. Not only did he fail to give AFCB a stonewalled as they come penalty but he booked Pugh for diving just to rub salt in the wound - never forgiven that one! I have however seen him have everything from outstanding games, through mediocre games to absolutely dreadful games. Consistency was his biggest lacking, imo, but something he was improving on as time went on and he was turning into a pretty solid referee. I agree he should not be fast tracked just because he has been there before, however nor do I believe that he should be held back because of or judged due to his past. If his current performances merit good marks and progression then good luck to him, if they don't then he should not progress.  He should be treated the same as everyone else, be afforded the same chances as everyone else and judged purely on merit and not what he did or didn't do previously.

I've watched Mr R Madley do 2 Tranmere games this season. Seemed to have put a bit of weight on, no significant errors in either game, could have benefitted if goal-line technology available in the first where a couple of balls down bounced off the bar and hard to tell if crossed the line.

I've met Bobby a few times and one thing he most definitely isn't is arrogant, far from it.
