I agree with the comment about Joe Worrall

Sadly though the inclusion of Keith Hackett has the precise opposite effect

Never was a truer word spoken.
In the words of Mr Gilbert, "What, never?"

Well, hardly ever.
I'll lay 'em and you can crack 'em!

Think the panel in 2003/2004 was very strong - Poll, Durkin, Barber Bennett and Halsey, with Webb, Clattenburg and Dean coming onto the scene.

I have to say I was never as impressed as some were with Graham Barber. My recollection is that he was quite understated in his style, perhaps not unlike Pawson in that respect, although that wasn't really the reason for my lukewarm view.

And I can't say I was a fan of Steve Bennett.  I know he was highly respected by many but he came across to me as over-officious.  I read somewhere that he was good at explaining decisions to players but he didn't seem to have a great rapport with them whenever I saw him.  Perhaps just a hint that he was a referee who knew the laws but didn't always have a good feel for the game

Of others mentioned from earlier decades, Taylor, Finney, Partridge, Courtney, Worrall  were particular favourites whose names I was always pleased to see on Manchester United programmes. Then there was Neil Midgely, mainly seen on tv as I'm not sure if he could referee United in those days, except perhaps for the derby against City.

Speak as you find. Saw Barber live a couple of times and he was poor on one occasion and extremely poor on the other. The authorities rated him highly though. Saw Bennett a fair few times and each time he refereed well.

From memory the Gilbert quote is from HMS Pinafore and refers to the "big, big D"  In Worrall's case it would stand for Distinction and in Hackett's for Deplorable

Jim Parker from Preston.... what a card shark he was...... makes Breakspear look as lenient as Grant Hegley in comparison......

Two straight reds here on this video... not sure why he didn’t show a second yellow on both occasions.

Thank you! You did set me up in front of an open goal, so I'll give three cheers and one cheer more.

The showing of a second yellow before a red wasn't required in those days.  When it was brought in to aid clarity some referees took to showing both cards in the same hand at the same time, which made it no clearer whether it was a second yellow or a straight red unless you had a TV closeup.

Goodness me, why what was that ? I had better take the advice and "silent be" unless a non-feline is administered to me.

WS Gilbert was very fond of topsy ACF,as well as Basingstoke.
It all ended with a statutory duel, although a Persian rose gave half an encore...............

I have sometimes idly wondered why Gilbert chose Basingstoke as the place, the repeating of whose name, could pacify Mad Margaret. |I suppose it had to be  somewhere or something but anyone know?
