Both are set to retire along with Dean at end of the season

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2022/04/28/premier-league-referees-martin-atkinson-jonathan-moss-will-retire/

It is also reported that Atkinson & Moss will stay at PGMOL whereas Dean won’t

Moss will be the new manager of the "select group one" referees who take charge of Premier League matches while Atkinson will be the group's coach.

So with the 3 retirements, that will take SG1 down to 19 officials. You'd think there should be a promotion or two from SG2 this summer and have them do something similar to what they've done to Salisbury, Harrington & Brooks this season, particularly with a nod to having further retirements next year. On the plus side, this should guarantee more regular games for those three, Gillett and the likes of England & Jones next season. In my view they've all shown they are capable and deserving.

Any news on any assistant referee retirements? Haven't seen Kirkup on the appointments for a while, and Darren Cann has been around forever (btw that's not meant to be in any way rude, he's still excellent!)

Dean would certainly be an upgrade on Walton if he does decide to move into TV...

Last year only Lee Mason retired and they promoted four in Gillett, Brooks, Harrington and Salisbury. I wonder if that was to ease them in this season as they knew there would be multiple retirements a season down the line. That might explain why they have been used so sparingly even in comparison to previous gentle introductions to first year Select Group officials.

Might be the best news I have seen in a while. This explains why lots where appointed and given a bit of experience this season. Big season coming for Gillett next season.

Atkinson and Moss in roles within the PGMOL will be good too

Dean, Atkinson and Moss all still play important roles in doing big games this season. I know some other younger names like Madley, England and Gillett have already shown their potential for that, but are they ready to take over big games in the next season? I'm not quite sure.

I'm afraid that the worst situation, which I don't want to witness at all, is the deficiency of big names - only Taylor, Oliver, Marriner and Pawson would be capable of taking charge of big games.

Glad to see Moss go never rated him especially in big games. Surprised to see Atkinson go as I think he still had a lot to offer

I’m guessing that there could be a promotion from SG2 to SG1 for next season … Robinson?

Toner into SG2 or most likely Bobby Madley must be in the frame.

Josh Smith must be a candidate, given the calibre of appointments he has been receiving this year.

Another excuse for Riley to give Paul Tierney some more undeserved big games

Feels like the end of an era with Mike Dean and Martin Atkinson retiring in the same season :(

When the job description was released I thought it was written for 1 person.... Martin Atkinson, so surprised its Moss with Atko as the coach.

Martin has achieved a great deal as a referee and deserves a lot of thanks and praise. I always found him easy to get on with, helpful and a bloody good referee.

Sad to see Atkinson, Dean and Moss retire at the end of the season, however i am sure it will the body talking rather than what they would like to do.
The first two top drawer referees and the latter a safe pair of hands at the height of his career.
With Moss and Atkinson joining Riley at the pgmol perhaps they should move headquarters to Leeds.
I think Atkinson will make a good coach.
Good luck to them all in future endevours.

Well said Claretman. I have always felt the constant criticism on here from some towards Moss has been unfair; as you say a safe pair of hands.

I'm pleased that I was present at two of Martin and Jon's top games, Martin at the Championship Playoff Final in 2013 and Jon at the 2015 FA Cup Final. I note that Jon has not refereed any playoff finals and I wonder whether he will bow out with the Championship Final next month. I wish all three all the best for the future.
