Sports Personality of the Year
« on: Sun 16 Dec 2018 23:01 »
Geraint Evans 1st = 🏆
Lewis Hamilton 2nd = 🥈

But Harry Kane = 3rd you must be joking! WHY??  Oh that’s right he won the Golden Boot at the WC for scoring 4 pens and 2 tap ins against 3rd opposition and doing bugger all else. Sorry but it’s a joke when proper star sportsmen like Jimmy Anderson finish lower.

Cue the Harry Fan Club......

Well you could say that about anyone in sport really.

Harry Kane captained England to a World Cup semi-final for the first time in a generation and has scored pretty consistently for Tottenham this year. He's clearly a talented footballer.

It's perfectly understandable as to why he was one of the nominees - someone involved in England's World Cup journey was always going to be - and from that point on it's a public vote.

I agree with you Readingfan. And I thought the Beeb were right to keep the nominations under wraps until the start of the programme, thus saving the possible embarrassment of having a 'nobody' manipulated by social media into one of the top positions. Mind you, I can't see why the Palace were not nominated for Team of the Year nor why Christian Benteke wasn't amongst the individual nominations  :D

Geraint who? On this basis I presume Geraint Thomas will be in line for BBC Singer of the Year.

I thought it was a nice touch to see Paul Alcock included in the montage of sportspeople who have died in the previous year.  Shocking to see how young some of those who died were as well.

Nice one Bakis, but I'm not sure the younger fraternity will remember the late great Sir Geraint Evans, although I was surprised to see he died back in 1992.  How time flies as one grows older.

Whoops, wrong Welsh surname. I stand humbly corrected. And yes I am more than old enough to remember the wonderful gravelly tones of the great Sir Geraint.

Very surprised Jimmy Anderson didn't even make the top three.  His contribution to the game over many years seemed to me to deserve some recognition.

Also with none of the ladies making the top three either, I guess the Beeb's Equal Opportunities Department must have had kittens.  A few years back I had a bit to do with the BBC and being seen to get the gender, ethnic and geographical balance right seemed to be the only thing that mattered!

Thomas - won a major title in his field
Hamilton - won a major title in his field

Kane - can you outline the medals he’s come away with this season?

Well, I don't really see the relevance of the comparison because Kane came third behind those two.

In any case, it's a public vote and isn't simply dictated by what an individual wins. Of course comparisons across different sports can also be difficult.

(Difficult for a footballer to have won anything so far this season anyway!)
