I remember a referee on a feeder League in the 1970s turning up without his kit, and he had to borrow a tracksuit top and shorts + boots from the home side. But wearing ordinary shoes...? No I don't think so  ???

I'm pretty sure they are the black astro trainers with the attached fabric that comes up over the ankles.  In one image I've seen you can clearly see the fabric attached to the boots.
