Anthony Taylor- Man United v Liverpool

Well, the overruled penalty

At first I thought it was a pen. The more I looked at it I thought it wasn't. I don't think the follow through was as late as it looked

Opinions?

Where’s the clear and obvious error there?

For me no penalty. There is contact on flow through but it is not with the studs and falls into the category of incidental rather than foul contact for me.

Having said that, I felt it was a subjective call and one could quite reasonably see it as a foul. The VAR intervention was not correct IMO, nor consistent with the standard for 'follow through' contact type fouls we have seen this season.

If it was indeed a foul, which I'm not 100% sure of I thought the follow through contact was just outside the box

I'd have to agree

I'm OK on it not being a foul, the issue I have is there is no way that matches other applications of clear and obvious errors.  Compare this to the Fulham keeper handling out of the area on Monday, that was way, way more of a clear and obvious error but wasn't even looked at.

It’s probably not a penalty but the referee gave it and VAR has rerefereed the game to a standard far below what’s it meant to be used for.

VAR can’t remove what causes issues which is inconsistency just highlights it further

Very poor from Anthony Taylor. A clear second yellow and red for McTominey. Haven’t a clue what Taylor is watching.

A clear second yellow for a blatant handball for Cavini. It’s clearly deliberate trying to gain an advantage. Free kick giving but no card.  The man is having a nightmare second half.

"Trying to gain an advantage" isn't one of the circumstances where handling is cautionable.

Thought he was terrible. Awful decision for the penalty, bially clearly plays the ball cleanly, minimal if any contact with LFC player. Don’t think he saw it well and guessed from shouts of the players. Similar incident with tackle on fernandes in second half given as a throw in.

Very random foul detection- i didn’t know what he was going to blow for and what he was letting go, became a bit of a free for all. MUFC #3 also unlucky to be booked as I think he plays ball and minimal contact. He blows for foul on pogba in midfield looks like he is going to book Thiago and then restarts the game, which was a bit weird.

How McTominay wasn’t sent off is beyond me- yes he slips but clearly takes out Mane - his head must have gone.

No bearing on the final result tg

For the amount of time it took to check the non-penalty decision, I wonder if the VAR screen was a touchscreen where the on field official could choose one angle from an incident and slow it down, so it'd only need to be checked once.

I thought the ref in the City v Chelsea game had a mare in overlooking a clear pen for a push on Sterling but this guy was even worse. One could almost imagine it was the same person......

......hang on.....
