For me it clearly met the threshold of violent conduct and should have been a Red Card. This wasn't, in my view, Mane just flailing his arm in a reckless manner, I think he knew perfectly well where his opponent's head was and he was sending out a tough message about his physical strength, early on, which was bordering on intimidation. Red Cards have been shown for less this season.

I suspect very senior referees are now seen as 'managers of a spectacle' rather than strict law enforcers and this game was a most entertaining spectacle with 11 v 11 and refereed, subsequently, perfectly adequately by Taylor. If football is as much about entertainment as it is about sport, then perhaps this is the way to go.

Bent arm, clenched fist, movement towards the player - deliberate, malicious and intended to hurt/intimidate
Red card
I agree if ANY doubt here give the ref a chance to see the angles.
Mount's was probably yellow so VAR unable to intervene

Credit to AT and team for rest of the game, supported a very good football match

Taylor largely reffed the game excellently and contributed to a great game of football, but I'd err on the side of red card for Mane, Mane has long history of doing this sort of thing, and theres no doubt in my mind its intentional, as others have described above, bent arm, clenched fist etc, made it seem deliberate to me.

Irrespective of the parties involved surely it is very dangerous to go down the "he has previous" line.
Assess every incident on it's individual merits we are told and he did.
As stated elsewhere there was dialogue involving 4O AR and VAR with a unanimous concensus that YC was appropriate

Because it was a huge decision for him to make so early in the game and he was keen to get opinions. Atkinson would have been able to see the coverage of the incident I believe

Do we know it was unanimous? Unless we hear a taped recording of the conversation between the participants surely all we can know is that Taylor decided the correct sanction was a caution and not a sending off. If all the participants were indeed of a unanimous opinion then in my unequivocal view, they were unanimously wrong. An opinion shared by Henry Winter writing in today's Times and the pundits on Match of the Day. Our opinion though doesn't count materially, only Anthony Taylor's does and whilst acknowledging his undoubted status, I am 100% convinced in my own mind that his decision was wrong.

It's an interesting point about the " he has previous" argument. I have heard many senior referees say that a good knowledge of players and their  behaviours is invaluable in officiating and drawing distinctions. I don't know if Taylor subscribes to this view or not. Of course each incident must be judged on its apparent merits but previous knowledge of previous conducts can, I think, be legitimately employed in making a correct interpretation of what has been seen.

The 4th official absolutely cannot use any pitchside video even if they have line of sight of one.  Also VAR protocol does not allow the referee and VAR to discuss the incident prior to making a decision, rather VAR can only become involved after a decision has been made.  So in this case it could only be after Mane was shown the yellow card.

Point taken, but even just judging on individual merits, it still meets the threshold for a red card Imo.

But they do

Well they should be pulled up on it then as it isn't allowed and they aren't using VAR as it is supposed to be used.  Which probably explains why it is such a shambles in this country even though it works fine elsewhere.

The broadcasters can hear what the VAR is saying so I doubt they would be involved too much in the discussion before a decision is made.

I think the suggestion PL VAR was very different from elsewhere a few years ago was valid but I'm less sure now.

(I'm just surprised no one has suggested it was cruel to send Taylor, not to mention Atkinson and England, all the way down to London on a Bank Holiday weekend !  :wink )

Well given the volume of opprobrium received when last I commented, I decided that discretion trumped valour and kept my cake hole shut 😉😉
