Allegiance ?
« on: Fri 14 Apr 2023 08:26 »
With Michael Oliver apparently not doing games with bearing near the top of the Premiership because of allegiance to Newcastle, and now James Bell being moved from his Ipswich game as he is Sheffield Wednesday fan, should Keith Stroud who apparently is a Luton fan? be doing and has been doing games with clubs involved in the Championship playoffs?

I suppose the issue is where do you draw the line, but if it is being done in 1 case it should be done in others.

I don't know who - if anyone - Keith Stroud supports, but (given his upbringing and location) Luton Town strikes me as unlikely.  Happy to be proved wrong though .....

It does seem strange, but I have seen it mentioned a couple of times, he hasn't officiated them this season, he has done 22 out of the 24 (Preston NE being the other one, some would  say lucky them!) and that well known trusted source Wikipedia even mentions it.

James bell recently refereed Accrington v plymouth who would pose an equal rivalry to Sheffield we'd this season but no complaints before during or after from plymouth.  I watched the match I thought he was very good.  So there was no need to change him from the Ipswich game . An able ,impartial,  professional referee . I have more concerns that Ipswich seem to carry some clout with the powers that be.
My views are my own and not that of rate the ref .

It's one of those well known facts but not sure where or when it first came about. I think he has confirmed it in an interview before but not 100% sure of that! Supported them from a young age apparently. I've heard it for many many years from an AFCB fan who has been good friends with him since they were at school together - Bournemouth School for Boys (the boys grammar school in Bournemouth).

I don't really think it is fair on the officials, puts them in a really awkward position.  No one really thinks it will affect their decisions, but there is such a thing as subconscious bias.  If there's a 50/50 decision they might subconsciously go against the team they support, indirectly obviously, especially when there has been a load of noise about their appointment and formal complaints like what Ipswich made about James Bell.

The difference with the Plymouth game is it was in March, it only seems to be in April that they adopt this approach.  Which makes sense really, using Michael Oliver as an example there was a good chance that Newcastle would be challenging for a European place come the end of the season.  But they can't keep him away from the likes of Spurs, Liverpool, Chelsea, etc, all season.  Plus it would have been pointless as two of those are nowhere near a top 6 place, and they couldn't possibly have guessed that the likes of Brighton, Villa and Brentford would have been challenging instead.

That didn't stop him refereeing Manchester United v Everton last weekend (not that there were any major incidents arising in the game).
