Accrington Stanley V Barnsley Rebecca Welsh

Wow what can I say simply the worst display of officiating I have ever witnessed in the FL and I have seen Willard and Kettle in their pomp. Erratic decision making to say the least can't say she lost control of the game because she never had it, inconsistent cautions, failure to identify players being targeted by the opposition, average fitness at best.  I have seen better refs on the Northern counties east who never made it who were 10 times better than this. I hope I never have the misfortune to witness this official again!

Very interesting that the Stanley fans website is saying she's the best ref they've had all season. Didn't see the match so can't comment further but the view of Ms Welch obviously depends which team you support.

Those of us who didn't (hopefully) know better could (incorrectly?) suggest that a spot of gender bias was just visible on the periphery of this post

Not sure it’s entirely fair to suggest the poster was giving his criticism because the official was female, female officials should be no more above criticism then male officials.

Maybe his "gender bias", if it exists, is empirical.

It is more likely a case of we didn't win - there is obviously a degree of bias here - I have just seen a video of some of the match made by a Barnsley fan with the headline 'shocking ref' - and comments during the video make reference to the Accrington  penalty as being 'no way' but they were denied a 'definite penalty etc
Obviously a  clear case of 'fan bias'
To be fair I didn't detect any bias about female ref although it was pointed at the start 'we have a female ref today'

I thought Gary Willard was a very steady and reliable official..however I didn’t see him that often as he is Sussex based IIRC.

However your comment on Kettle in his pomp would certainly provide vivid memories for posters on here.

Very scathing comments - I wonder what the match observer/assessor reported?

More a case of bigger team expecting to win at little ole Accrington de railed by referee having audacity to correctly award penalty to little ole Accrington when the away teams player played juggle the ball in the area . Saw this official last season and maybe not the best she was definitely top 10 and nothing like the official described by the o.p.
My views are my own and not that of rate the ref .

To the thing from lewis

I ran the line to Willard on the premier league and believe me he was abysmal

Opinions as such where as Mark Halsey and Graham Poll were class acts

We are in esteemed company having a ex premier league linesman , piqued my curiousity as to your identity haha I thought Willard was ok but you would know better than me , agree with you about Halsey and Poll , there was quite a good list of good referees in those days such as Dunn ,  Peter Jones , Burge, Barry , Bennett , Durkin, Styles , Wilkie I could go on

Willard has history with Barnsley from an infamous game against Liverpool in the Premier League.

But she could have had a poor game yesterday and there might be other decisions and general match control that made the OP start this thread. Just dismissing the comments without evidence to the contrary is poor form.

I've seen quite a lot online criticising Ms Welch's performance yesterday, from both sets of fans; it can and does happen, as we all know. That doesn't mean she isn't a good referee, does it?

I saw her last season and thought she was very good, in a game that ended in exactly the same outcome as at Accrington v Barnsley, so it's not necessarily result-dependent.
