As I refuse to touch the rag and in fact wouldn't offend the cat's bum by putting it in the litter tray I haven't seen the items you refer to

Perhaps Messrs Taylor and Dean have forgotten what it is like to have hair.

Indeed ( and I know the feeling ) Lack of a shaggy, well covered poll, at least among its male practitioners,  seems to be a feature among the officiating classes in recent years. Among the company of referees from yesteryear I recall one who had very long and rather unkempt ( certain no Milford style perm ) hair. I am sure one of the senior members of RTR will recall and name him. A gold star for the first to do so.

Nobody has even suggested a name notwithstanding the offer of a gold star. A clue, his name ( give or take a minor discrepancy in spelling ) is the same as a Northumberland beauty spot ( and this referee did not come from Northumberland )

Your teaser did not go ignored, Whistleblower, but there was only one referee that came to mib=nd as being on the scruffy side: he was from Lancashire, but I was not convinced that my recollection was correct and did not wish to malign him unjustly. Clearly he was not the person you had in mind, as his name does not suggest a location in Northumberland.

There is an attractive section of the East Coast main line as it approaches Berwick on Tweed, which might suggest an official from Caistor/ Gt Yarmouth - though my memory of him does not include any shaggy mane, in fact more the reverse, though that may have been in his latter years.

The referee of whom I am thinking was certainly from the North West. I rather lose track of when places were in Lancashire or Greater Manchester or Merseyside but it's certainly that neck of the woods. The Northumberland rural idyll with which he shares his name is not on the coast.

The referee you refer to from Great Yarmouth, sounding like the  Berwick  on Tweed coast,  is rather a kingly person if I catch your drift but it isn't him. In fact this referee was plying his trade a few years later, mainly in the 1980s.

Powburn could become Mark Cowburn, but he is a couple of decades too late. Alas, my knowledge of Northumberland is sadly limited. Perhaps someone from there could help.

I don't know if you are a member of the National Trust JCFC but looking at their Northumberland portfolio should be a great help to you.

Thanks for the tip. I did not think of including a Christian name and it would not have helped as I had never heard of the place in question. Similarly, I have no memory of the appearance of the gentleman.

AB indeed it was. Which leaves me wondering who you might have been thinking of as the less than smart Lancastrian ? RD by any chance ?

No, it was not him - though like your man, he used his second forename rather than his first.

I was thinking of one RC, but may be totally wrong in my recollection.

Hmmm....trying to think of a Lancastrian RC. Ray Chadwick perhaps ? Can't remember whether he was dapper or disshevelled

I assume AB refers to Robert Allan Banks and found this reference in a post by BAFRA#217 in April 2020.

“Robert Allan Banks from Manchester died at the weekend from coronavirus, aged 78. After being a #Referee on the Football League in England he brought the same integrity to #AmericanFootball, being President of @BAFRAOfficial. @BAFAOfficial @IFAFMedia”

Left Field then posted that RAB was a fl referee based in Radcliffe, Manchester from 1979 to 1986.

Must admit I'd never heard of Allen Banks in Northumberland despite several holidays in that region over the years.

Alan Banks is also the name of the TV detective based on the Peter Robinson novels about Inspector Banks.

I have had a look through Upton who lists all Football League Referees from 1888 to 2004. Although Banks is by no means an uncommon name R A Banks, listed as from Radcliffe and later Atherton, is the only person of that surname listed so a unique distinction.  Under a separate listing of Association Football Referees for 1888-1890 there is a R Banks ( Knutton, Staffs. ) and a T W Banks ( Market Drayton ). Of course the SG1 now boasts the more unusually spelt Peter Bankes.

The name Banks has very good associations for me. At school, the master who did the most to set me on a good academic path by conveying the joy and accomplishment in learning was called Banks and I have always been a sucker for the scene in Mary Poppins where Mr Banks goes to face his judgement at the Bank only to discover his liberation.

Tuchel fined £20000 for his reamrks about Anthony Taylor. THis was an expensive match for him with total fines of £55000, although I suppose that it is peanuts to him in this modern world of football.

Probably about on par with me paying for a happy meal!
