Antonio Mateu Lahoz Retirement Announcement
« on: Thu 05 Jan 2023 16:03 »
Apparently Lahoz is retiring completely at the end of the season

Unfortunate as I can't help but feel the final nail in the coffin was the QF in Qatar

Agree with you fully Adam. Understandable but I for one will miss his somewhat eccentric Dean-esque style of refereeing. I wish him well in retirement.

He's already retired once before Euro 2020(1) but changed his mind.

Shame in a way - he's a great personality however he's prone to randomness and some very bizarre games! I like him though, he seems very likeable.

We now at a awful crossroads where the most elite of officials are nowretiring and what is coming in behind is so far off PL/ top flight level in that country the level is crazy 😆😆

I have never seen the premier league so weak and the options to promote are so few and far between.

There is nothing official yet. Just a rumor.

The broader issue is really quite acute.  Throughout both England and Scotland, a vast number of officials resigned/retired in 2020-2022.  That was throughout the pyramid, but a lot at the middle-to-lower echelons.

That will have an impact over the next few years, as the number of experienced officials vying for promotion is lower than it would normally be.
