Very much agreed referee12. I know that every referee needs different management but I do hope they don't fall into the trap of under appointing as seems to be the blanket approach (more or less) post Atwell. I think the likes of Jones and Hooper have really suffered from this, it can't be easy to get to the tempo of the EPL when you only get one game a month+.

The likes of Brooks and Gillett I would hope can be appointed a little more frequently from the off. Brooks has extensive experience as a EPL AR (may be true of some others, I don't know) and Gillett has extensive experience in the A-League, as a FIFA referee and as a VAR in both A-League and EPL. Frankly, given his performance in the playoff SF I think he could have been promoted sooner. I take the point you can't judge from one game but I don't believe a performance that good can be a fluke.

The best thing about 4 new, relatively young referees in the EPL is that, I really hope anyway, it will create competition around selection for the FIFA list which previously seemed to be a right for all EPL refs given age and 1 season on the list.

lets hope one of the new refs get "a big 6 game as I think I remember Paul tierney getting one as soon as he was promoted

hopefully the young refs will be at the top of the referee appointments table and not the bottom

With the SG2 numbers having been reduced by three since last season, I suspect some will be disappointed if the first year SG1 appointing differs from previous years.

Although with six SG1 referees being 50 or over, I can only hope that they will look beyond the 21/22 season.

In theory, having 22 referees should mean the likes of Oliver and Taylor being able to get some rest after European trips away, and likewise, the elder members of the list could be used less often which may benefit performance and fitness.  However, my hopes are not high that this will be the case.

Paul Tierney didn't get a "big 6 game" - Man City v Southampton - until three months into his third season on SG1.

We can probably predict now which games Brooks, Gillet, Harrington and Salisbury will be appointed to. Fixtures like:

Brentford v Brighton/Norwich/Southampton
Burnley v Brentford/Norwich/Southampton/Watford
Brighton v Brentford/Burnley/Norwich/Watford

and so on....

I think we may see Gillett used more regularly than the others, with Harrington, Brooks and Salisbury gradually getting introduced. I think the promotions are some forward thinking from PGMOL, with quite a few referees likely to accept a specialist VAR role before too long!

On a slightly different note the PGMOL have sent referees out to Australia during the break between seasons to run technical sessions and referee matches. The last two that came out were D Coote and M Salisbury with K Barrat. David was SG2 at the time and Michael was not SG2. Would seem that the Australian trip is a pointer to promotion..... or just a happy coincidence.

Normally one of the recently promoted PL referees. Chris Kavanagh came out a few years back after he was promoted to the PGMOL. Think it was the year or two years before that, Bobby Madley and Simon Bennett came out.
David Silva olé.
