EFL have said their recommendations are that if the season can't be completed in any division, the league standings should be decided on unweighted average points per game, promotion and relegation should still happen, and the play-offs should still be played (if possible) with the usual 4 teams.

Here's a novel idea. Why not just promote the top three in the Championship and League 1 and the top four in League 2?

I'm surprised it's never been done before!

They would have to pay back more TV money.

There’s something wrong when it comes down to that as a reason.

Well perhaps, but many EFL clubs seem to have significant financial problems as it is so having to repay money they've received from the TV contract by not fulfilling the play-offs isn't going to help them. After all, money has been a big factor in the decision making process as to which leagues continue and which don't.

Yes, I'd agree with that, but if the Championship continued, for example, Sky could choose to broadcast more games - perhaps offering deals to fans as they can't attend - which might somehow compensate for the terms of the TV contract not being fulfilled.

The play-offs would only feature four teams; would ending the play-offs mean other clubs having to pay money back?

In fact, has it been said anywhere that money would have to be refunded?

It might turn out to be a more exciting title race if promotion was extended to third place as a one-off for this season.

According to breaking news on BBC Football, the Premier League season is set to restart on 17 June with Aston Villa v Sheffield United and Manchester City v Arsenal. The matches are the two games in hand. A full fixture list would then be played on the weekend of 19-21 June. Clubs are still discussing the idea at a meeting on Thursday, but it is understood all have agreed in principle at this stage.

I remain unconvinced that this is the correct course of action but I sincerely hope that everyone involved stays safe and healthy.

FA Cup Final penned in for 1st August. I hope that if this comes off, it won't be regarded as a 'one-and-only' for a referee such as Tierney or Pawson, given that the Final will presumably be played behind closed doors and lack the usual atmosphere and build-up.

Talking of which, would it really be necessary to play the semis at Wembley in these circumstances?

Looking forward to the Premier League and FA Cup returning. I think announcements have been as expected really.

It will be interesting to see how refereeing statistics for games without supporters compare to games with them.

On a personal note I am not sure if it’s right to restart and, even as a City fan, would have been ok with Liverpool being awarded the title. However I do appreciate there are issues re relegation and promotion to sort out.
When it starts again any thoughts on appointments? City v Arsenal was down to be reffed by Jon Moss before lockdown. Do we feel that one of the biggies will now get the game to herald the restart, possibly Oliver or Dean?

I think travel distance may be a factor in appointing referees. As the current regulations stand, they would not be allowed to stay overnight either before or after the match - so would need to travel both ways on the same day. They should not be using public transport (train) and would not be allowed to share a car with somebody outside their household.

I don't think you will be seeing Oliver, Taylor or Dean in London or the south coast the rest of this season.  It would be interesting to see the geographical spread of the referees and what are their closest clubs. That will dictate a lot of the appointments!

And clubs will now have to pay out in expenses fees if they are not travelling together!

I'm sure they can afford it.
