Kettle to Southend for the last time?

Almost certainly.

He comes to Southend fresh from a cardless match at Stevenage last Tuesday; the last season he had two consecutive cardless matches was 2006/7 so long odds on a repeat Saturday.

I wonder two things. How often any referee has two consecutive cardless matches ? What is the longest number of consecutive matches (in recent times ) that a referee has been cardless ?

Thought Grant Hegley might be a candidate. He had four consecutive cardless matches in 2007/8.
In his last two seasons he showed just a miserly 76 yellow cards in 63 matches of which 24 were cardless.

If one is looking to award an accolade of least punitive referee of more recent times then Grant Hegley would always be a pretty safe bet. A very good referee and a most delightful and characterful person. Having said that, I do have a rare Collector's item, a Red Card from Hegley. It was given in a Play Off semi final when he had come on as 4th Official after the referee went down injured. The offence happened about twenty feet from where I was sitting. The most obvious handball by a defender on the goal line preventing a goal being scored. Hegley, as they say, had no option other than to dismiss.

Grant Hegley's last match was at Portman Road. He went off injured. I wasn't at the match but I expect m'learned friend nemesis probably was. Hegley didn't recover for the rest of that season and decided to retire at the end of it. A great loss to senior refereeing.

I can remember Roger Furnandiz showing a red card - he Hegley and a couple of others had chronic withdrawl symptoms with the circle of doom

I too remember Roger Furnandiz showing a red card, and they were quite Collectors' items too. At Luton for a defender hauling back an attacker bearing down on goal with only the GK in front of him.

Only three cards today at Root’s Hall.

Andy Haines' 34th Rochdale match and the second time this season he's done this particular fixture.

Hmm, in January's game v Crewe he gave Alex a penalty that wasn't and was forced to overturn it by his assistant.

Today he gave them another penalty that wasn't! It's even annoyed our laidback manager.

Think it might be time for him to hang up his whistle on that showing.

Just seen the Crewe penalty and it looked like a pretty poor decision.

In worse news, James Adcock was only able to last for 20 minutes before being replaced by Ben Toner at Scunthorpe this afternoon. Desperately sad for him yet again

As sad as it may be surely this must be the final curtain for James.

Yep, clear dive and made even worse because Haines was in a good position to see it.

One must applaud Adcock for trying so hard to make a come back after his injury but as many good referees have found ( I am thinking particularly of Michael Naylor ) there comes a point where you just have to listen to what your body is telling you and make the hardest of decisions. Let us hope that this is just a temporary blip for Adcock ( and this latest incident may of course be quite unrelated to his previous injury ) but it doesn't look good.

i have seen Adcock referee live once after he came back from injury. He ran a pretty central channel, didn't go out wide much and appeared to he holding his sprints back considerably. It was a straightforward match to referee and he did absolutely fine but there will be very demanding matches where the referee really does have to be consistently in absolutely the right position to maintain control.

Very sad about Adcock, but I don't think he can go on much longer.  Real shame as a few seasons ago, he looked destined for SG1 - I remember him taking control of a very feisty Yorkshire derby between Leeds and Sheffield Wednesday (which was usually given to a PL referee) and him putting in an excellent performance.

As an ardent Crewe fan, I was totally flabbergasted at the 90th minute penalty award, and was more than a little relieved that Rochdale got a 98th minute equaliser. A really poor decision from Andy Haines, given (as has been pointed out) his positioning at the time.

I agree (obviously). Overall I thought we just about edged the game, but we are in the relegation zone due to our own failings, not poor decisions, over the course of the season. I have noticed Haines seems to be getting worse, though, and I do see a lot of him!

Co-incidentally Andy Haines was the last referee I saw live at Gresty Road, Crewe v Stevenage in L2 just before the first lockdown, and I thought he was OK that day.

James Adcock came off after 19 minutes on Scunthorpe v Walsall game with Ben Toner taking over in the middle.
