I can hear the groans of the Rochdale fans already.....

Add to that Donny fans. Andy Woolmer is the stuff of nightmares...

...and another referee of yesteryear still also seems to give JohnCoyle nightmares. They must be very poor sleepers in Doncaster, having such terrible dreams  ;)

What about that notorious card shark from Preston called Parker... an official from yesteryear who probably was the main culprit for the majority of player bans in the Football League.

Not forgetting Mr Coddington of Sheffield and Mr McNally of Mold

Never saw Parker but I remember the bruhaha about his excessively liberal use of yellow and red cards. McNally was another referee who I never saw live but enough times on TV to gain the impression that he was a dedicated limelight seeker. Coddington I did see live, both in his first and second incarnation on the National List; dreadful every time.

MR by any chance Whistleblower?  ;D

I think I may have seen Mr McNally in action but not the other two. Another card shark of old was John Yates of Redditch - a regular if not popular visitor to Selhurst Park - who (I believe) ended up in trouble after showing his list of bookings to a reporter after a particularly tough game (? Everton v Chelsea comes to mind). Keith Walker was another hatchet man although, like the current card shark on the PL, I recall Keith was also a very good ref and got some top games before retiring early to take up a post at Sheffield United.

I saw Kevin McNally once and he managed to miss one of the most blatant handballs you've ever seen. Other than that I don't remember much about him.

I had the "pleasure" of seeing Jim Parker on several occasions and can remember at least four red cards being handed out to Donny players. A couple were justified, I think, but one was unbelievably harsh, for a challenge that hardly warranted a yellow.

Because Brian Coddington was Sheffield-based we only had him as a linesman.

Not saying he was a card shark but an very strict disciplinarian was Malcolm Sinclair. Happened to be a very fine referee too in my opinion who never seemed to get the recognition from the 'powers that be' that he warranted.

Ah yes, Malcolm Sinclair, the original Surrey card shark but probably too old to have given lessons to his current Surrey counterpart. I'm not sure I can agree he was a 'very fine ref'. On the odd occasions I saw him (and this from a former Surrey colleague), I found him to be somewhat officious, a bit like John Gow, another top ref who I never liked seeing. However, give him his due, the Bramley builder survived to retirement (unlike ACFT), serving a very creditable 13 seasons on the list, and that must say something about his abilities as a ref.

Interesting A T ,  I saw John Gow a couple of times and I remember him as very lenient in what he deemed to be fouls rather than officious.

It's funny what you remember from so many years ago. I was once at Portman Road watching a very scrappy match and I can't remember who the opponents were or indeed who the referee was except that he was clearly not exercising much control of proceedings and someone next to me in the crowd said to a companion " this ref is terrible, no control at all, Sinclair wouldn't let them get away with this nonsense"

In true RTR style I’m not sure why I’m about to comment about Brian Coddington on a 2020 appointments post.

In his two visits to Portman Road I managed to see the best and worst of him.  His first visit saw a very competent performance in awful wet conditions with just the one caution.  The second occasion Reading were reduced to nine men very early in the second half in a more traditional Coddington performance.

I am hoping to see Ross Joyce in action at Crewe on Saturday. Hoping because he failed to make it the last time he was due at Gresty Road and was replaced by Ben Toner who had a good game. Crewe v Macclesfield is a key game, with the home side needing to get back on the promotion trail after (imo) not getting the rub of refereeing decisions at Plymouth last Saturday. And there is no love lost between the two sets of supporters after the game at Macclesfield had to be called off in view of Macc's problems earlier in the season. So a tasty Cheshire derby in prospect and I hope Ross and his team have a good game, he certainly seems to have settled down after his problems at the end of last season.

I'm pleased to be able to report that Ross Joyce did indeed have a good game at Crewe yesterday. Two yellow cards were spot on and whilst a couple of meaty challenges seemed to go unpunished, the players got up and on with the game, which was good. Even David Artell had little to say to the officials during the game which was unusual and good after last week's goings-on at Plymouth. The game was one-sided and lacking in atmosphere for a Cheshire derby, but that didn't detract from a good performance from Ross and his team. Well done!

I would agree  Ross Joyce had a good game yesterday in the Cheshire derby, and his performance was as good as I have seen at the Crewe games I have attended this season.

I’d been fairly neutral about Mr Breakspear from previous time in the middle at Tranmere games, but he was very poor at Wycombe. Not seen the goals back, so I can’t yet comment on the validity of any grievance for the first Wycombe goal involving a push and/or hand-ball or whether the Wycombe penalty was outside the area. He gave free-kicks for the slightest touch on a home player, but it
had to be approaching ABH level before Rovers got an award. Cards seemed to be dished out randomly, almost as though he was trying to keep the numbers up. Disappointing.

HUGE game for pollard Coventry v Rotherham. The two Oldham’s with key matches at both ends
It was indeed a huge game for him, having done only 4 at this level.  I have to say that Pollard was well short of the required standard for a game of this magnitude.  It was a hard fought match in harsh conditions and Rotherham play a physical game.  The referee was clearly out of his depth from the start and his lack of consistency frustrated both sets of supporters as well as the teams. It did look like it could all get out of control in the second half. It is difficult to blame him for his inexperience.  However, it is inexplicable that a first year rookie could be given the clash between the top two teams in League One.
