I think generally games are being used more as trials these days whereas in the past promotion was generally a fait accompli once they'd had a trial game. I would say Lewis Smith is an EFL ref in all but name after this season. It all depends how many refs come off the list. A few there have been generally steady refs at NL level for a few years like Middleton and Tallis and others who are relatively new even at NL level.

I remember seeing Rob Ellis and Sian Massey running the lines at Chesterfield, probably about 12 years ago. They were an item, but not yet married.

I'm sure I asked that question before after seeing Mr Hilton at Crewe Alex. He reminded me of Mr J Osborne from Ipswich, a FL referee in the 1960s who always looked a lot older than the 40-something years that he had to be prior to retirement!
