Kettle was fine. One ridicolous decision however, he slipped over, the ball hit him and changed sides but gave the FK to the side who had won the ball rather than Argyle who had lost it.

Another inconsistent performance from Mr Busby yesterday. Tolerated a lot of dissent and didn't YC to the same standard.

If Kettle gave a free kick in this situation, I would imagine he would be hearing pdq from the 4O or AR, or have his ear chewed by the assessor after the game. A drop ball is surely the correct action in this instance.

And having just seen it, an appropriate award.

Have only seen it live, and thought at the time it looked 'soft', but once given it has to be a Red Card.

Indeed, due to the delay I wonder if the AR gave it?
I do miss the flag across the chest signal which makes it obvious.

After that I thought that Mr Breakspear was very inconsistant.

Everybody knew that the next Peterborough foul would lead to a caution and it did, although it was no where as bad as what had gone previously.
He then let numerous similar challenges go from both sides before realising he had to get control and cautioning for a very minor offence.

This led to the crowd, but more importantly the players losing a lot of respect for him and his decisions, and nobody knew what was a foul or a caution.

As an aside, what role can the 4th official have in decision making?

A clash right in front of the dug-outs with claim from the bench for handball.
It was obvious that the ref or assistant couldn't see because of the players blocking their view, but after a delay a free kick was given.
Again, the benches confronted the 4th official who had perhaps inadvertantly given the decision.
Is this allowed?

I was also at Peterborough and agree with pretty much all of Skydank's thoughts.

The AR (Chris Husband, I believe) didn't visibly give the penalty but he was in the best position to see it and the delay suggested to me that he gave it via comms.  Player reaction also suggested that they thought he had given it.

I wouldn't agree that his decisions with regard to yellow cards were biased against Peterborough.  There was clearly one missed against Wycombe's Josh Parker for a challenge that was obviously in retribution for not being given a free kick seconds earlier.  It was obvious that it was going to happen before he made it too.  However, what was going to attract a yellow card was certainly difficult to predict.  Perhaps we are closer to solving the mystery of the number of red cards Mr Breakspear has.  Unpredictable cautioning leading to player frustration followed by good detection of serious foul play perhaps.

I thought the handball that appeared to given by the fourth official (Andy Hendley) showed good teamwork.  Aside from the fact that it was a correct decision, what is the point of having a mic'd-up official with a different angle if he is not going to draw things that he sees to the referee's attention?  On the same lines there was some good work by Marc Wilson who appeared to draw some off the ball nonsense behind the referee's back between Ivan Toney and Sido Jombati while the ball was out of play.  That was a battle that continued after they were spoken to and should probably have been sanctioned more severely later.

Hi Ref Watcher

Good to see we are mostly on the same page again.

I obviously didn't make myself clear, I didn't mean to imply he was biased against Peterborough as I said he didn't caution for players from both teams for challenges that maybe warranted it based on previous cautions.

However, I do think that it was obvious he would caution the next Peterborough player to commit a foul after the sending-off, if nothing more than to 'manage' the game.

Agree that the 4th official got the handball decision correct, but not sure how the LOTG accommodate this?

As you stated, his officiating did lead to frustration all round which could contribute to his number of Red Cards.
All correct in themselves, but born out of frustration of earlier decisions

Does seem to suggest that poor officiating in the first place leads to players getting frustrated and then the cards flourish. Kettle and Young fall nicely into that bracket.

Law 6.

The referee, assistant referees, fourth official, additional assistant referees and reserve assistant referee are the ‘on-field’ match officials.

With the exception of the reserve assistant referee, the ‘on-field’ match officials assist the referee with offences when they have a clearer view than the referee

Thanks for the clarification.

Thought, they could still only 'report on offences where they have a better view', after the match.

To be fair to Alan Young the Northampton defender certainly handled the ball for the Leyton Orient penalty.  It was a pity that Young missed the shove in the back that the defender received in that incident.
