The communication is only between VAR and referee, and only the referee goes to the screen.  So it needs to be an SG1 referee as they have been trained on, and are experienced in, VAR protocols.

The only difference for the ARs is they need to hold the flag, not saying that isn't a big change, but it doesn't need the same level of training as the referee does.  I also wonder if they are in line for promotion to SG1 and have already been at SG1 training camps and exposure to VAR.

I see Ben Toner has now replaced Bobby Madley on the second leg. Could well indicate Toner would have had the final if not for VAR as a few speculated.

NL Refs not being able to do the final is definately something that needs to be looked at for future seasons. Most if not all the NL refs had VAR training at the start of the 2019/20 season as the original plan was for them to act as 4Os in the Premier League to ease the workload when VAR started. Obviously if they were called on they have to know what to do. That plan went by the wayside when COVID hit.

Possibly but we may never know.

What I do have a problem with is this VAR use being announced after the League One finalists have been decided and halfway through the Championship and League Two semi finals.  This really should be decided before the play offs commence.  I have no problem with VAR being used in the finals but this would appear to be the EFL making this up as they go along.

Do the ARs have experience of using VAR? On the face of it, it feels like the job is more different for them as they need to delay the flag and so on for close offsides.

It was suggested for the Championship that the clubs involved were consulted and were in favour of VAR being used. If that's the case for L1 and L2 then I'm happy with its use - I would also want VAR in place if I was involved in a play-off final.

I can imagine it being disappointing for some SG2/NL referees who might otherwise have got these games. But if that was the only reason against then I don't think it should outweigh the wishes and needs of the teams. Going forwards, I think it would make sense to give some non-SG1 officials some exposure to VAR in for instance the cup competitions so they have some experience when we get to these sorts of games. There have been suggestions VAR might be introduced full time in Championship fairly soon too.

I'm surprised VAR hasn't already been implemented in the Championship if i am honest I expected it the season after the Premier League If I am honest, but I agree with your VAR assesment with SG2, maybe they will get training during this summer from SG1's and get given ago in cup comps next season

Simon Hooper has the L1 final, confirmed in PGMOL twitter. Lee Mason as VAR. Seems all finals will be SG1 refs this year.

Full Appointment:
Referee Simon Hooper
Assistants: Adam Crysell and Craig Taylor
4O: Tim Robinson
Reserve Assistant Greg Read

VAR Lee Mason
AVAR Mat Wilkes

Lee Mason? he hasn't been good for 10 years

I can understand the dislike. It should be 20 years.

To be fair, Mason's been retired from active refereeing for a year so his on-field performances probably aren't so relevant now (and certainly he generally wasn't one of my favourite referees.) I guess it is his VAR abilities which matter for this appointment and in fairness I can't remember him being involved in too much controversy this season.

Really pleased for Jarred Gillett on his appointment to the L2 Play Off Final. A reward for a very good debut season in the top flight for the Australian.
