Anthony Backhouse refereeing Mansfield v Northampton for the second time in five weeks.

Bobby Madley refereeing Mansfield having also refereed them on the final day of the season.

Think previous occasions go out of the window when appointing for play offs, you want the best officials on the games regardless of who they might have refereed recently.

Only exception might be if there was controvery in one of those recent previous games.

Yes, I'm not insinuating anything by it; it was merely an observation.

CONFIRMED: VAR will be used in the league 1 and league 2 play off finals

Surely these games all have to go SG1 now

I am of the opinion that none of the P/O finals should have VAR - the teams have limited experience of it and it changes the pace and flow of a game.
Plus it excludes those refs below SG1 who have performed thr best.
Did appointments guru know and has used #1 from SG2 and NL?

Simon Hooper has the L1 final, confirmed in PGMOL twitter. Lee Mason as VAR. Seems all finals will be SG1 refs this year.

Full Appointment:
Referee Simon Hooper
Assistants: Adam Crysell and Craig Taylor
4O: Tim Robinson
Reserve Assistant Greg Read

VAR Lee Mason
AVAR Mat Wilkes

I stand to be corrected but I believe that this is the first time a play off final at this level has had a PL referee since David Elleray in 1994.

I’m not sure if these two assistants have had previous VAR experience but they will need to adapt to not flagging immediately for close offside calls.

So league 1 and 2 are VAR. Therefore SG1 officials for finals, as they are the only ones trained in the use of VAR. Another kick in the teeth for SG2 and L1 and L2 referees, who have performed well throughout the season. Nothing to show for their efforts at the end of the season. As someone said these teams are not use to VAR and play there games accordingly. Very poor decision.

Well done to all, esp the assistants (although why an AR can be used but not a ref is beyond me)
Pleased for Hoops as he has improved immeasurably

I understand Mike Dean has the League 1 Play Off Final, Sunderland wont like that !!!!

If true, it would make sense as the L1 Final is the only Playoff Final that he has not refereed. However it would presumably mean that he wouldn't get a middle on the last day of the PL season. So will Leeds v Brighton on Sunday be Mike's final PL middle? If it is, I hope there will be some marking of the occasion. Moss then for the Championship Final?

Oops! I'm sure emu80 will want to add their apologies to mine! So Mike will probably get a PL send-off next Sunday, which is good. He'll be welcome at Selhurst Park for Palace v Man Utd. And congrats to Simon and team, a well deserved honour for a much-improved referee.

Can anybody confirm the rumour that the card shark has the League 1 Play Off Final.

I can confirm that was just a rumour and was incorrect.

Congratulations to all, especially Simon Hooper who has had a good season, but a shame a sg2 official hasnt been appointed.
Craig Taylor seems to be picking up some good appointments, even after the incident in the fa youth cup final.

I am still of the opinion Mike Dean may be appointed to Leicester v southampton where his premier league career started, but who am i to know the thoughts of the pgmol.

Do the ARs have experience of using VAR? On the face of it, it feels like the job is more different for them as they need to delay the flag and so on for close offsides.

It was suggested for the Championship that the clubs involved were consulted and were in favour of VAR being used. If that's the case for L1 and L2 then I'm happy with its use - I would also want VAR in place if I was involved in a play-off final.

I can imagine it being disappointing for some SG2/NL referees who might otherwise have got these games. But if that was the only reason against then I don't think it should outweigh the wishes and needs of the teams. Going forwards, I think it would make sense to give some non-SG1 officials some exposure to VAR in for instance the cup competitions so they have some experience when we get to these sorts of games. There have been suggestions VAR might be introduced full time in Championship fairly soon too.

That’s exactly what I am worried about. If we need VAR to be involved, is it more sensible to make a team that knows exactly how VAR works involved?
