SG2 Jeremy Simpson for the top of L1 clash between Rotherham and Wigan on Friday night. I think I'd have preferred to have seen an experienced League ref such as Drysdale or Breakspear.

With that Cheltenham appointment I believe that will make it eleven out of thirty four matches Ipswich will have had an SG2 referee this season with five of those in the last eight.  It would be interesting to know what is behind that.

Trouble is, if you didn't know you certainly wouldn't realise from the performances. I expect Tuesday to be little different.

Exeter v Barrow is the first (of possibly many) to fall victim to Storm Eunice.

I’m guessing there are frantic safety checks happening across the UK this morning as soon as first light appeared.

Nothing else off yet but I’d expect that to change.

Crewe and Harrogate games postponed.

The late decision by Martin Coy to call off the Crewe v Portsmouth game has caused some controversy. This from Crewe News online:

"THE late postponement of Crewe's home clash with Portsmouth today (Saturday) left referee Martin Coy under scrutiny. The match official called off the League One clash after holding a 1.45pm inspection amid concerns over large areas of surface water on the pitch at the Mornflake Stadium. Crewe had been keen to get the game on despite the wet weather and the pitch was playable until torrential rain after midday. Yet after the cancellation the surface appeared to drain quickly and looked in reasonable condition by the time fans were leaving the stadium concourse. Pompey boss Danny Cowley was convinced the game could have been played. “We had a lot of rain in a couple of hours. It was a difficult call, but I think it could have been playable with the right remedial work,” said Cowley".

I was not there yesterday, but a friend who was in the stadium on duty from 12noon said that the game could and should have been played. He pointed out that fans from both clubs were not actually notified that the game was off until shortly before 3pm, which caused anger, particularly amongst the away fans. In my friend's view, Coy could and should have allowed the game to go ahead at that point, and fans admitted to the stadium with a delayed start.  This happened a few years ago when Graham Horwood allowed a game at Gresty Road to go ahead at 2.30pm, and the KO was delayed 15-20 mins whilst the fans were admitted. The same thing should have happened yesterday, and what actually happened was unacceptable to the clubs and fans alike.

I'm not sure how fans of both clubs weren't notified until shortly before 3pm. It came up on my phone as a PP when I was on the way to Scunthorpe, which was well before 2pm.
