TVOS with the pleasure of the Surrey card shark and royality for the two newcomers in the EFL.

That’s a quiz question.. have SG1 done the two newest EFL members in a match together before??

Nemesis with an opportunity to have his opinion changed of his long time…well, nemisis!

Looking forward to the review from that game, maybe opinions can be changed and hatchets buried

Spotland debut for Breakspear. He’s always been absolutely fine when we’ve had him down south.

Interesting appointment, though, for what could be something of a needle match for the one of the teams.

Never seen Ben speedie before so don’t know what to expect? Looking at his record over the past couple of seasons he seems to have a high card count for teams from league two and below with rather a low contrasting count for his league one fixtures. Not sure what to read into that? I’m sure I will let you know on Sunday 😉
Saw him at Elland Road in the Carabao Cup two weeks ago and I thought he handled a full Elland Road well albeit not the most difficult game to referee.

I'm puzzled about your reference to a needle match?

A lot of people connected with Tranmere blame Rochdale for their PPG relegation in 2019/20, despite the fact we had been above Rovers all season, took three points off them at Prenton Park and had a higher PPG.

Those people were getting swayed by the three wins Tranmere had before football stopped, rather than the six months that preceded them. At the time of Rovers' third win in that sequuence, Rochdale had just beaten Rotherham, who went on to get promoted, so maybe we were in good form as well.

It wasn't just people on messageboards and Twitter either...

Obviously this doesn't include your goodself.

Have to admit, I wasn't aware. This probably isn't the place to rake through the pros and cons of our demotion, but I've not seen anything recently to suggest any added spice to this fixture from a Tranmere perspective.

No, but this is our first meeting since then, so it's probably a game on the EFL's "watch list", which is something that exists, I believe. We had it three years ago when Lee Probert was bizarrely appointed to Rochdale v Accrington. Our photographer asked him why he was there and Probert replied, "Powder keg local derby, apparently!"

It's probably been the most friendly local derby rivalry I've ever experienced in my 40 years watching Dale, so it was very odd.

How did the card shark get on on his first visit to Spotland?

Yeah, it sounded like a thriller!

How did the card shark get on on his first visit to Spotland?

I thought he was outstanding. Three yellow cards to Tranmere in the first half all correct, two yellow cards for Dale in the second half also correct.

He let the game flow as much as possible and was quick, decisive and accurate in his decision-making. He also seemed to have a good rapport with the senior players on both sides, although I'm not sure how well he does with a combination of Irish and Scouse accents.

Although Tranmere hit the post twice and should have equalised deep into added time, I thought we deserved the win for the first half performance.

Boz may have other views, if he was there, but I though Charlie contributed fully to an excellent game.

Not quite such an enthusiastic review from the Tranmere jury, I'm afraid.

Mr Breakspear started well, defused one of the potential flash-points by having a word with Clarke and Beesley. With the game going smoothly, I didn't think the rash of cards for Rovers players was merited. The first two didn't seem to be particularly bad fouls, some officials would take the view a free-kick was sufficient sanction. I thought Macmanaman was entitled to go for the ball with Coleman, but it was the opposite end of the pitch, so harder to evaluate that challenge. When he awarded a throw-in to Rochdale where the ball appeared to have hit their man last, it felt like we weren't going to get anything from Mr Breakspear. Thankfully he reverted to a more relaxed approach for the second half. Rochdale deserved their win.
