Rare for a referee to do the Community Shield twice but I think it probably indicates that Atkinson has had a distinguished career and that a lot of importance is being placed on the game considering all the new law changes and the focus that will be on refereeing at thse start of the season with the introduction of VAR>

I thought that Atkinson might do the first Premier League game with VAR (Liverpool V Norwich) but obvioulsy not! I'd previously thought that Michael Oliver might get that privilege but with the fiture list I think he will do Man Utd V Chelsea.

Interesting that those two Assistants spent much of the last season with Chris Kavanagh
