Weymouth v Needham Market won't be happening. Needham Market have scratched because they don't have enough players available, which seems an odd situation for a team playing in the FA Trophy.

Also Aldershot have so many first-teamers unavailable they are sending their Youth Team to Bedford (now that sort of information could help you clean up at the bookies!)

Why don’t they just supplement the first teamers they do have with youth players, like other teams do on a regular basis?

The local view:

https://www.eadt.co.uk/sport/wilkins-slams-football-asscociation-and-weymouth-after-needham-s-forced-withdrawal-from-fa-trophy-1-5821671

and

Further to a hastily convened committee meeting on today's date we wish to record our clubs position with regard to the rearrangement of our FA Trophy fixture against Weymouth FC.

We consider that it is completely unreasonable to attempt to play this fixture on Tuesday 18th December.

Our players and staff had to take a half day's leave from their employment on Friday 14th December to travel down to Weymouth. For us to request that our players and staff take a further one and a half or two days leave on Tuesday and Wednesday (18th /19th December) in the week preceding Xmas is considered unfair on them and their employers.

Having experienced the travelling time on Friday / Saturday (14th / 15th) which resulted in a journey slightly in excess of seven hours each way, it would be necessary to leave Needham Market at 11.00 am on Tuesday 18th and arrive back at the club at approximately 05.30 am on the morning of Wednesday 19th. Factor in that a number of our players reside in north Norfolk, this would result in additional travelling in excess of one hour for those players, which makes it apparent that two days holiday would be required for them.

In addition, and after looking at the weather forecast for the South coast area, it is extremely likely that the match will, once again, be postponed.

In view of the above we therefore request that the match is played on Saturday 22nd or 29th December. Should the 29th be preferable to Weymouth, and in view of the fact that date for subsequent matches in this tournament is mid-January we offer to play the match to conclusion (extra time & penalties) should it be necessary. This offer will not apply should the fixture be rearranged for the 22nd.

We consider that this decision fails to take account of the practical problems that would be incurred and, in addition, fails to display even a basic level of common sense. If rules are to be applied in such an unconsidered manner then the FA Panel should be replaced by a computer !

Co-operation from Weymouth which has sadly been lacking plus making the necessary arrangements with the Evostick League would have enabled the fixture to proceed as per our proposals but unfortunately self interest has prevailed.

Apologies, once again and thank you in anticipation of your ongoing support.

Some valid points there.

I think both the club and the manager make very valid points. Travel times at this time of year are always higher than you expect with weather and shoppers, plus the short notice to get time off is a very important point, players have other full time commitments. A disappointing result.

Yes, poor, as usual, from the FA.

Ironically, it would almost certainly have been called off again but probably not until they were well on their way.

They did manage to pick up 3 points last night in their re-instated home league match with Redditch.

Not sure what the alternative was though.  If you enter a national competition you know you could face long journeys, potentially midweek in the event of replays / postponed games.  The FA Trophy rule on postponements makes it clear what happens if a Saturday game is postponed, as below …

(c) First matches which are Postponed
(i) When a first match has been postponed, it shall be played on the same ground on or before the following Thursday.

So it couldn't be played the following Saturday, even taking aside the fact that both teams would have league games scheduled that day anyway, so the only option is midweek.  Will be interesting to see whether The FA accept their reason for withdrawal as reasonable, as otherwise they will be banned from next year's competition.

(c) If a Club decides to withdraw from the Competition after a drawn, postponed or abandoned match, notice must be given to The Association and its opponent at the end of the match.
(d) A Club failing to give satisfactory reason for withdrawing from the Competition shall in addition to any other action considered appropriate not be allowed to enter the Competition in the following season

I think the competition rules need to be looked at.

The FA vase manages to allow next Saturday replays, and it doesn't matter what mileage is involved after the 2nd round. This was shown in the Tring Athletic Vs Biggleswade tie which was played the Saturday after yet both teams are in the same league and could have effectively played each other midweek. As it was, the replayed date was the same day they were due to face each other in the league

I believe that teams should travel no more than 150 miles round trip midweek in any round for the trophy or vase, unless mutually agreed. If leagues have to postpone games then so be it.

I appreciate the Trophy is the senior non league competition but there are still very semi pro teams in it.

The other option would be to allow teams in step 4 to either enter the trophy or vase. but I feel that would be unfair to step 5 sides. of course there is an argument that it's unfair for step 4 teams playing full time outfits as well

The rules are not in dispute. It is the FA's slavish adherence to rules regardless of the circumstances that does them no credit, in my opinion.

Needham Market will regularly have league games postponed for replays, league cup fixtures and even County Cup ties so I don't see that as the biggest issue.
