Darren England, Rob Jones and Tim Robinson fly the flag for the SG2s at PL grounds, all of course with VAR. Rob and Tim have already had PL trials.

John Busby, Marc Edwards, Michael Salisbury and Anthony Backhouse are the FL reps in this round, although Michael and Anthony will have had Championship experience by then. I know nothing about Marc.... ?

Last season, Crystal Palace had Atko for their home 3rd round tie v Grimsby, this season we have Michael Oliver for a fairly run-of-the-mill tie v Derby. Should we be flattered or is there something we don't know on the terraces at Selhurst Park?  ;D

Plus Jarred Gillett at Bramall Lane

Do people think we could be seeing both Gillett and England with PL games in the New Year?

A bit surprised they're continuing to use VAR at every PL ground in the FA Cup, given they've stopped doing that in the League Cup. It's good to see that they're giving SG2 referees use of VAR this time too and no surprise to me that it's England, Jones, Robinson and Gillett who are chosen.

Good to see Coote, Madley and Attwell get a go on live games but less convinced about Moss!

Very interesting set of appointments:

Robinson, Jones, England and Gillett all get games at PL grounds and opportunities to practice using VAR. Surely a sign that these 4 gents are considered as the next SG1 officials. Indeed, with VAR likely to stay, 4 promotions would be a decent number to help relieve the pressure on an overstretched SG1. I would expect England and Gillett to get a PL match early in the new year. Indeed, I hope Mike Riley continues to utilise these officials in the PL. Jones certainly deserves another game after a decent performance this weekend.

The TV games show a decent spread of appointments. Madley and Coote both get the chance to show off their shiny new white badges on BT. Moss was certainly not who I would ever have expected to get this particular match but I hope all goes well for him!

As for NL representatives in this round, John Busby gets another decent game and Marc Edwards has got to be the shock of the round. A first year ref getting a 3rd round middle is unheard of. Surely a sign that he has settled to life well in the EFL (not that I’m surprised having ran the line to him on a number of occasions - top ref and top bloke!)

Saw John Busby at Crewe on News year day, missed two blatant elbows to the face, and didn't really inspire confidence missed numerous fouls during the game, so surprised to see he has a 3rd round cup appointment.

I've seen John Busby a few times and if I have a criticism of him it is that he's very lenient. He seems to be at the other end of the scale to the likes of Breakspear and Young.

It looks as though one of the assistants has taken ill at half time at Brammall Lane leaving Ben Toner to run the line for the second half

I missed that one due to illness. I was however at Crewe this afternoon and thought that James Linington had a reasonable enough game although how he failed to issue a yellow card to a Barnsley player in the 1st half for a crude lunge, I do not know. However he didn't miss much else and kept the game moving, thus ensuring entertainment for both sets of fans. If you can stay awake long enough, have a look at Barnsley's third goal on MOTD. Bizarre is all I'll say!

I think Linington is a good solid and much underrated ref and am a bit surprised that his name never seems to be mentioned when the usual names of potential PL refs - Robinson, England, Brooke’s etc - are trotted out. He doesn’t seem to have many bad games or court controversy like some.

It looks as though one of the assistants has taken ill at half time at Brammall Lane leaving Ben Toner to run the line for the second half

From the BBC site:

'Is there a qualified referee in the house?'
There was one moment of drama for the officials as United went through, with assistant referee Daniel Leach having to be substituted at half-time because of illness.
An appeal was put out over the public address system asking for any qualified match officials in the stadium to make themselves known to a steward.
Tyler Machin, watching from the stand, answered the call, making it a busy day for the teenager as he had refereed a local league match in Worksop in the morning.
Machin took over as fourth official, with Ben Toner stepping up from that role to run the line in the second half.
