The old and the new. Very pleased for Dean who thoroughly deserves it and proof, were it needed, that Kavanagh is now ahead of all the other FIFA ( non Elite ) referees.

is it the practice, does anyone know, that an AR for a Semi would not normally also be appointed to the Final ? I had thought Massey-Ellis was nailed on for the Final this year, unless they are going to have Second-Timers again which I thought was unlikely as there will be a crowd present, albeit not as large as in most years.

That may well be true about Kavanagh although Pawson could still be appointed for the Final.  Nevertheless, I agree that a SF appointment at 36 in this case is probably more telling than a Final appointment at 42 for a FIFA referee perhaps expected to get it after 8 years as an SG1.

if it's a First-Timer, I fully expect Pawson to get the Final. It would be perhaps churlish to call it Buggins turn but your comments are spot on I think/

I think it says more tbh of the poor management of referees in this country. Too many being kept on now beyond an age when some should have retired but we now have the added complication of employment law. Referees in England in my opinion have been kept on too long and we are now suffering from a system that has so many levels it's ridiculous and then there's no gaps for any new ones to progress. I said this to people years ago when the likes of Hackett, Cortney Milford etc. were still reffing. I believe this is why we're behind Germany, Spain etc. with the number of elite refs because when they've overcome all the levels they're almost already too old for FIFA.

Incidentally Craig had a semi 3 years after making the PL and Chris is 4 years in. So I'm not sure it says anything about either ref but a lot about the poor management of refs in England over  the last 40 years. I also think most here would believe that for Covid Craig would have had last seasons FA Cup Final and I also somewhere have in the back of my mind that a referee had to have done their domestic highest games including Cup Final before becoming elite. Though I could have made that up

Having watched Mr Grinfeld from Israel Mr Hategan from Romania and Mr Marciniak from Poland I fail to see how any of those are better than Craig Pawson.

I believe that relates to going to the Euro's/WC as opposed to becoming elite in the first place.  Clatts was elite way before he had the cup final. In fact he was only finally given the final AFTER being named for the Euros

I think Pawson would have got the FA Cup Final last year if there were no Covid

How far the appointment to an FA Cup Final gives a good indication as to pecking order is a moot point. Obviously geography, Club allegiance and injury is always a factor but it will be very interesting to see who gets picked for the Final in the next few years and in what order. I would hazard the guess that the next three will be Kavanagh, Tierney , Attwell and then England and Coote will feature somewhere. Of course the appointing authorities are always capable of " doing a Moss " and throwing it to Mason or Scott but I think that is most unlikely, even for such capricious operators as the FA.

Surprised that Kavanagh do one of fa cup semifinals, which probably means Pawson and Tierney will be the choices for two cup finals. With Tierney and two fifa ARs in Championship while Pawson with no fifa ARs in Emirates, I would say Tierney for league cup final.

Indeed one should never do that. If he's young enough to wait a few years then he too will surely receive the honour one day.

I wouldn’t rule out Attwell who has had a decent season for the final.....

He has had a decent season but I would be surprised if he pips Pawson to it this time round. But with the FA, you never know.

Slightly surprised Kavanagh got a sf, considering he has been out with COVID contact and has referred 1 pl game in over a month.

Personally I would have given it to Tierney who has been the most consistent for me. Dean I think was probably a farewell present.

Depending on the final two I would predict:

Leicester vs Chelsea/Man City: Pawson
Southampton vs Man City: Attwell
Southampton vs Chelsea: Mason/Scott
