Most big hitters out, and shockingly Tierney gets what is quite possibly be the biggest game of the round other than Kidderminster vs west ham

Jeremy Simpson ????? 😱😱😱😱😱😱😱. Do the powers that be really consider him worthy of a 4th round tie or has the competition been devalued so much that even a dire ref like him can get an appointment?

Simpson ? ? ?  beyond bizarre.   Josh Smith continuing his rapid rise.   Gillett now well established at SG1 level

Simpson gets a difficult local derby, how the appointments people are able to justify seems difficult to understand after recent performances.
Taylor doesnt have far to travel for his game.
Gillett with a good appointment.
Tierney with another plum tie after recent unconvincing.
With some of these appointments it is surprising ward has not been rewarded after his display at huddersfield of recent.

I'm not sure it's much of a reward for an SG2 referee. I believe the appointing powers for the FA Cup are different to those for the Championship and League. It wouldn't in the least surprise me if there is no joined up thinking between them.

A little confusing to see Simpson on the Yorkshire derby, as it could get a little heated. I would’ve preferred a lesser-used PL ref, maybe Robert Jones on this fixture but it is just my opinion.

My maths works out that 12 of the 16 are SG1. Why not all 16? I really don't think FO appointments are that meaningful. However, the VAR appointments are meaningful - & I bet that, after this weekend, VAR will be a hot topic. Not so much the games which have VAR but, actually, the games which don't have VAR. Fingers crossed I'm wrong of course!

I know the appointing powers for the cup competitions are different to the pgmol for sg1 and sg2, in fact i believe an ex colleague of mine from younger days had an influence on the f a cup appointments, he has now retired.
You might be right that there is probably no joined up thinking but i would expect the appointing team to have watched some football and certain performances before appointing.

Ps i have just amended my previous post re ward as i missed a not in it, now says surprised he has not been rewarded.

Didn’t Lord Elleray oversee FA appointments a while back?

I believe you are right TTFL, he certainly had a role in the cup final appointments.

As current head of refs committee I guess he has oversight.
Day to day appointments made from FA HQ
