I had my first viewing of Marc Edwards last Saturday (Doncaster v Coventry). He didn't do much wrong, but I thought he was rather fussy and gave a lot of soft free-kicks (to both sides). On balance though, I prefer seeing some of the younger referees rather than some of the rather uninterested-looking old lags we tend to get at Donny.

Incidentally we had his wife, Helen, on the line at the previous home game. I wonder if they have officiated together. Some years ago I recall a game (at Chesterfield, IIRC) where Sian Massey and Rob Ellis (as they then were) were the assistants. (I don't know if they were an item then).

Hooper probably the most experienced in not having VAR being used given his sporadic PL games....

I'm sure they'll be hoping Marriner has recovered by the time of the Manchester derby in the LC on Wednesday given lack of referees available this midweek.

Moss would seem the only other option. Can't be Mason, Friend or Atkinson because of the FA Cup ties. Only leaves Bankes, Hooper and Scott.

If Marriner is under the weather, there’s a high chance he’ll be fit by Wednesday!

Hooper did well!

Not so much at awarding penalties!

Word of praise for Graham Scott on Saturday. Watched him officiate the Portsmouth v Barnsley cup tie. Very entertaining game of football helped in no small part by a cardless unfussy common sense performance from Mr Scott. Nice one Graham.

Only one I am unsure about is the Liverpool hand ball late on. No intent at all but arm straight out so run the risk of it being given.

1st half against Aarron Pierre, arm right by his side even though he leans towards the ball. Nobody on the pitch interested.

The one given, there is one angle where defenders foot appears to be just outside the area but look at defenders knee it is bending forward and makes contact with attacker which looks like on the line. Only question I had was how was it deemed to be a genuine attempt to play the ball?

Overall I really liked how he handled the game. Lots of talking to the Shrewsbury players, normally when we have top flight Referees all the talk is with the Premier League players and you see it winding our players up.

Us youngsters recover quicker! It takes the body a bit longer as one ages, as I'm starting to discover myself.

A bit late but just to say Marc Edwards did pretty well in his match at Reading on Saturday.  Admittedly not a difficult game to referee but didn't look out of place and correctly gave a second yellow card to a Reading defender.
