It sounds like chaos! Danny Gratton becomes the 3rd referee to take charge of the match - not sure I’ve ever seen this before!

Something similar happened at Millwall last season, but Tony Harrington was replaced before the match so didn’t actually start the game before Lee Swabey was himself replaced in the first half!

Penalty, red card, yellow for timewasting
The observors report will be a scream
Cannot believe there was no neutral enough in the ground to get up to full compliment

Apparently Alan Clayton also pulled a muscle. Possibly didn't warm up enough. Two officials came forward from the crowd, one related to a member of the Accrington staff and the other a friend of a Crewe player but neither were considered to be neutral enough. The teams were then told that the game had to be completed with only one assistant with a toss of a coin taking place to determine which line he would run.

I wonder when Danny last referees a match of any importance. I don't know he level, but he will have been L3 and a specialised assistant, so could have been 3 years since.

They will have had to have the other assistant for ball in / out.

Would be interesting to see the full match simply to analyse the referee / assistant positioning.

I recall that in 2016, the referee of a Scottish Junior Cup Quarter Final had to go off through injury, the senior assistant taking over in the middle. The protocol on that occasion meant that the other assistant had to be removed, the match being completed with two club linesmen to signal "out of play" only.

2 very technical cautions. First time this season I would question the need.
First caution for over celebrating/delaying restart when he was not the goal scorer
Second caution for a "dive" when there was arguably contact (definitely not a penalty bit maybe not a dive either)

While we give Charles credit for having the bottle to show red cards and stick to the laws, imho two poor decisions today

I watched the highlights but saw the dive on FA CUP Final Score. If we going to caution players for that and then send the off the game has gone mad. First caution is IMO terrible;e. He didn't even pick the goalscorer out who was arguably more in the crowd. Great highlight of a ref not having any affinity with the game at all. Can understand why he's had so many red cards looked thoroughly miserable too.

Perhaps he is trying to emulate the legendary card shark called Parker from Preston.

I question the need for Charles Breakspear on a regular basis. He did his best to ruin Maldon and Tiptree's superb performance with a couple of totally unnecessary yellow cards shown to the same player (I've noticed him being prone to picking on players before). And to those who say he's usually right, despite the overwhelming statistical evidence, a good number of his countless red cards come about as a result of the way he referees. He seems to court confrontation.
