I am not sure that Portsmouth vs Salford has quite the draw of last years final. Whitestone was still NL ref was he not? Promoted after?
Has Salisbury Snr had it?
Boyeson a good shout, Johnson must be up there.

Yes, Whitestone was promoted at the end of the season after refereeing last year's Final. Johnson was 4O so may not feature this time. Yes, I believe Salisbury Sr has done this Final although not sure when. Salisbury Jr might be a possibility if they are looking for someone who is about to be promoted to SG2 although he lacks the seniority (? and experience?) of Whitestone and Woolmer.

Who do people think might get the final ?

It has normally gone to a senior FL ref who is nearing the end of his career. Having said that, both Woolmer and Whitestone have gone on to be SG2 refs. I can't think of anyone who is senior and likely to be promoted at the end of the season. So I'm going to go for Carl Boyeson who has been on the FL list since 2002 and has not featured in recent rounds of this Trophy competition. But I'm not putting Mrs AT's housekeeping money on it this time!  ;D

Very wise to put Mrs AT's housekeeping money straight into her purse. The appointment of a senior FL referee nearing the end of his career was when Dave Allison was responsible for the appointing. Now that fine man is no longer at the helm, I suspect other factors may come into play. If it were to be a senior FL as a reward for long service then Carl Boyeson is an obvious contender. Whether Johnson, having been 4th, might get the middle is not outside the bounds of possibility. If they are looking for a promotion candidate then Michael Salisbury would seem to be a good shout. Has Darren Drysdale had the Final? He has been about for years and years

No I don't think Darren Drysdale has had the Final before and would therefore be another 'senior' possibility.

Drysdale was promoted in 2004, same time as Andy Woolmer

I've got a list somewhere- I'll dig it out and see who has done it before out of existing referees.

As for this year, I'd maybe have a shilling on Neil Hair.

Of active referees who have done the EFL Trophy so far:-

G. Salisbury (2011), Woolmer (2016), Sarginson (2017), Ward (2018), Whitestone (2019).

If a senior National Group is going to get it, I'd make Boyeson and Kettle among the favourites.

Neil Hair is a very fine referee but a trifle too soon for him I think.

It will be interesting to see if they go with a long serving toiler or a promotion candidate.

I would be enormously surprised if Kettle got it but then surprises occur regularly when it comes to these appointments. I would say the old timers in the frame are Drysdale and Boyeson and the hopefuls are M Salisbury and if an SG2 then Webb.

Hendo - I was thinking of Kettle as a senior FL ref and yes, stranger things have happened. Charles Breakspear I think would be the first Surrey ref to take charge of a Final since Ray Lewis in the 1991 League Cup Final.

I should have gone with my instincts. Mrs AT and I could have dined out at Crewe's finest restaurant on the proceeds  ;D

Well, no-one should say that Boyeson doesn't deserve it. Well done to him. He joined the National List in 2002 and I believe had a bit of a struggle during a period of his early years on the List but overcame them by dedication, increased fitness and always being ready to learn. I hope he has a memorable day at Wembley, for all the right reasons.

It's good to see that Dave Allison's approach of rewarding long-serving toilers is being continued ny the present regime.
