I thought Taylor was poor tonight... how Xhaka wasn't carded after four blatant fouls yet Klich was for his first offence.

Also, Lacazette was very lucky not to go for a kick out which VAR ruled over. Looked deliberate to me!

Xhaka should have been cautioned, of that there is no doubt.  Don't think there was a lot in the Lacazette kick out, if the referee had given it I don't think it would have been wrong but very difficult for VAR to say that the referee had made a clear and obvious error in going yellow.  It was petulant but there wasn't a lot of force and I can't really see that it used excessive force or brutality.

Henry Winter writing in yesterday's Times described Taylor's performance as unconvincing and, not for the first time, I agree with Winter's assessment of a referee. Certainly Taylor's consistency on cautioning left a lot to be desired. If Taylor goes to the Euro's instead of Oliver, in my view, it will be a miscalculation on the scale of Clive White going to the World Cup in 1982 instead of George Courtney and the time when Riley went to a Euros Final instead of Poll.

On his day Taylor is an very fine referee; trouble is he doesn't seem to be having many 'days' at the moment.

I agree with you Whistleblower. With regard to Clive White, he was undoubtedly a fine up-and-coming referee, but I am fairly sure, 40 years on, that he attended the World Cup in 1982 (and refereed the 1982 FA Cup Final) only because people at the top knew that he would not be carrying on after the World Cup, with a guilty plea to deception spelling the end of his top-flight career in July 1982. Also, Clive was a shopkeeper (I believe) whilst George Courtney was a Headteacher and, bearing in mind that there were no fully professional referees outside of Brazil at the time, it is possible that George had to decline the opportunity to be away in Spain for a month or more before the school holidays. Such was the lot of top referees in those days.

Riley going to the Euros rather than Poll does not surprise me, and Hackett in place of Courtney at the 1988 Euros also comes to mind. It struck me at the time that Keith was getting his moment of glory (or a consolation prize) as George Courtney attended the 1986 and 1990 World Cup finals.

With fully professional refs now, I'm sure that the above would not happen today, but if it did, I would not be surprised to see Taylor at the Euros and Oliver at the World Cup finals in 2022.

Just curious AT why Riley going to the 2004 Euros and not Poll didn't surprise you?  Poll may have had an ego but I thought he was a strong referee when it came to man management.  This video reminded me of why I didn't rate Riley on that score.  My team were the major culprits but some of the challenges were horrendous with at least 2 deserving RCs plus Ferdinand getting away with DOGSO. Perhaps a good job for Riley that performance came the following season to the Euros!

Whenever I think of riley I think of that game also, I Don't normally like to talk about the ref in a game my team have lost, As It Sounds Like Sourgrapes, but he was terrible that day. That Was peak Man Utd V Arsenal Rivalry and he was way below the standard required for that sort of game.

Yes, and it wasn't just his management in that game but his decision making was woeful.  Not the only game either that Ashley Cole walked away from him when Riley was trying to caution him.

Sometimes the best referee goes to the Euros; - but not always.

I think Ref Fan you have answered the question you put to me. Sometimes the best referees don't go to the Euros.

Well for all of Riley's fault he knew 2 Yellows = 1 Red!

One of the most memorable PL referee performances. I know we're all guilty of using the throw-away comment "that was the worst refereeing performance I've ever seen" but I genuinely think this was THE worst refereeing performance in PL history given it's shocking, blatent and inexplicable one-sidedness. The only good thing to come out of it was that we didn't have to do much from then on to get a decision from Riley, especially at the Emirates!  ;D

Diabolical. The more you watch it the worse it gets. A totally inept performance from a totally overrated referee. Riley ought to show this at all his get togethers as an example of how not to referee a match.

I think Riley was caught in the crossfire of this. (Just to make you aware I think he was at best a poor referee)
Whoever had this game was always going to have a tough game - and they didn’t come much tougher than this game in pl history. Arsenal were no saints when it came to these games as it showed the year before, and vieira picked up more yellows than anyone.
That being said Riley had a poor game and I think the game was too big for him. It needed a strong referee who could take strong action whilst maintaining control and Riley’s performance allowed a bit of a free for all.
Certainly the tackle by G Neville was a bad one and could easily have been a red never mind yellow. Not convinced by the Ferdinand incident neither do I believe it was a penalty. That doesn’t mean that they were necessarily wrong either.
The penalty incident reminded me of the arsenal v United game last season with moss as the ref at the Emirates: a penalty given for not much contact according to the replay, but looking at the referees position you can see why he gave it. This is much the same with Riley’s decision!

I haven't seen any Championship games Mr Harrington has been in the middle for, but always been inconsistent when I've seen him live. Hoping he's improved since, as no VAR to overturn any errors. Bit surprised at this appointment.

I'm guessing the card shark from the Wirral will be cheering on from the stands at Tranmere. I wonder if the decision to put a SG2 official on that game given Dean's passionate public support of Tranmere was a factor.

Before the lawyers bang on the door, I'm no way suggesting by the way that any SG1 official would be compromised in that fashion.

Given the fact that Mr. Harrington will be supported by two very experienced SG1 assistants, I can only think he's being considered for higher things and this is his chance to shine.

Sadly, Mr Harrington and his team (and Mr Dean?) will be having a free night at home in front of the telly. Tranmere v Watford off due to a waterlogged pitch (BBC)
