Ross doesn't seem to be getting much match practice in following his problems at Walsall. Doesn't bode well for a major Final at Wembley, does it?

If he's not actually going to be stood down from the Final, it would surely have been better to let him referee a "dead rubber" this weekend?

Still no news on Ross it seems. His last game was on 19th April and the FA Vase Final is next Sunday on 19th May. Something wrong, surely?

And his next - the League 2 Play Off final 6 days later (go figure)

Thought he did well. Refereed with a smile on his face, no hint of arrogance, let the game breathe. Built up a good rapport with most players. Crucially got the penalty decision in extra time spot on. Despite commentators insistence it was "borderline"  definite trip, either on the line or just inside the box.
After the last few weeks you could almost see and feel Mr Joyce relax into the game and contributed to a good non league spectacle

So, he refereed a match between two Step 9 sides adequately, or maybe even slightly better. There's still no way he should be doing that play-off final.

For which you get no argument from me.
Other correspondents had described him as "arrogant", "officious" and "fussy" so I was pleased to see he displayed none of that and showed, as any official from a higher level should, that he had time to make decisions.
The rights and wrongs of his 2 post season appointments are a whole bigger kettle of fish

They have indeed described him thus; I haven't gone further than incompetent beyond belief.

I was at the Vase and Trophy finals.  From my position it was impossible to tell whether the foul for the penalty was inside or outside the penalty area.  Sadly that was also the case for Mr Joyce, who was barely outside the centre circle at the time and on the right hand side of the pitch not the left.  He had plenty of time in the build up to get himself to a better position.  In fact, throughout the game I found myself wondering whether his absence over the last month was due not to his performance at Walsall but to injury, as he refereed from afar.  That said, he did a competent job.  He was, however, way short of the level of performance demonstrated by Mr Madley in the later game.

Incidentally, are there any theories as to why the officials for the Championship and League Two finals have been announced but not those for League One?  I did wonder whether they were waiting to see how Mr Madley performed yesterday but the appointment of Mr Joyce in advance of the Vase final would seem to rule that idea out.
