Cracking game for Andy Madley - a sure sign of SG1 promotion in the near future?

Also good to see Akil Howson having a game involving a PL team - hopefully we’ll see him feature in the top division shortly.

One more thing that stood out to me - Darren England may have a championship v league 1 tie, but he has two PL assistants with him. Could this be a sign he is being prepared for a trial??

Millwall FC (First Team) v Hull City (First Team)
FA Cup
Referee: Woolmer, Andy
Assistant Referee: Cooper, Ian  Kane, Graham
Assistant Referee: Kane, Graham
Fourth Official: Whitton, Robert

Never had the same official running both lines. Should be interesting!! Lol

It would appear that it needs to be both a Prem ground and a Prem ref (exposure to system i assume will be the reasoning), although it would make sense to include SG2 refs in any training

I would agree with you, especially someone who has just refereed two Premier League games and would seem a leading candidate to (finally) be promoted to the SG next season.

I would have thought training and experience would be more necessary for the person acting as VAR because it's quite a distinct role, whereas I'm not sure refereeing with VAR is 'that' much different to refereeing without it. Of course, a referee needs to be given some guidance beforehand and has to consider aspects such as not blowing too quickly for an offside in case it needs to be reviewed but I wouldn't have thought it would take months of preparation for someone to officiate a game with VAR.

It seems that a red card should have been given to a Forest player early on and would probably have been so if VAR had been in use, as it so easily could have been.

What advantage is there to not using VAR today? It's done Madley more harm than good!

Apparently an assistant referee had to be replaced because of injury at Man City - I'm not sure if it was Kirkup or Long and who took over (Fourth Official?)

Peter Kirkup went off with the injury, replaced by Paul Marsden

Definite relief on Roger East's face when he got up again. By my reckoning it would be 11 years since East last took the flag

Actually, they'll be using the teamsheet given out at the ground on the day, so it's Newport who haven't kept things up-to-date.

I don’t think Grandad East would have appreciated a lino stint after refereeing a 90 minute game yesterday!

Good job I didn't go! I am told the ground was like a morgue so he'd have heard my cussing him loud & clear!

As it happens - the official who took over on board duties at Man City was one Jamie Robinson - an up and coming official on the Irish Premier League
