I get the logic and can understand why they have done this.

2 points though -

1. What if you are Pawson, Tierney etc who may have had it this year and then gets injured or something happens to your career, next year?

2. Can we read anything into Taylor going to Euro 2020 next year? It seems that Taylor is FA's preferred referee.

Based on appointments in Europe, UEFA seem to rate Taylor higher as well.  Interesting that the FA article mentions that Taylor and co are off out to Europe next month.

The chances of a career-ending injury to one of those due to have the final are very slim, so I doubt that was a consideration.  In my opinion, this was the right thing to do given the circumstance.  I doubt Craig or Paul would have wanted their one and only chance at the final to be in front of an empty stadium.

Congrats to Anthony and his team. I hope you all have a great day and a good game. My one concern is that this repeat appointment does not set a precedent. In my view, the Cup Final should be a once and once only opportunity for any referee to aspire to, which is why I would have preferred Scott or Mason this year, and any deviation from this would in my view spoil the dreams of many aspiring young referees. There, that's the negative view out of the way and I look forward to watching a really good game in front of the TV on the 1st August.

Thank God that Mr "I know it all" Hackett was wrong and they didn't give it to Lee Mason. Now that would have been a disaster. Taylor would have been my second choice behind Mike Dean.

Will Adam Nunn get a 2nd appointment at some point to get his family's final? Or does that privelege only fall to the referees?

Appointment wise makes sense if Anthony and whole team are heading into Europe, keeps them fresh/sharp. Probably does imply UEFA has Taylor over Oliver currently.

I would like to see Oliver do the play off final

Arthur G. Kingscott was the last man to referee two FA Cup Finals, refereeing the 1900 Final (Bury vs. Southampton) and the 1901 Final (Tottenham Hotspur vs. Sheffield United, as well as the replay).

The precedence has been set then, another in 120 years time...

Dean, yes, but if they were going to go the route of someone who had the Final previously, I would have put long-serving refs like Marriner and Atkinson ahead of Taylor.  I don't think he's been the best in SG1 this season and I'm not sure why having been in charge of Arsenal v Chelsea in 2017 even though he did have a good Final would put him in pole position.  To be awarded a second FA Cup Final even in these circumstances is quite an accolade so I suspect the appointment is more of a signal to all out there that the FA regard him as our No. 1.  If that's the case, it's tough on Oliver but he's got time on his hands being 6 years younger than Taylor.

Just a thought, but if Taylor is Elleray's choice, Oliver wouldn't be the first 'Geordie' referee not to win favour. ;)

Upon reflection I think a second appointment is regrettable and that would be my opinion whomsoever was appointed.  Bearing in mind age, I doubt Scott will ever get the Final and so I think that would have been fairer.

Interesting to see who gets the Championship Play Off Final, arguably a much bigger and more important match, especially this year. I would make a modest wager on Oliver

Knowing David Elleray slightly, I would have thought Michael Oliver was precisely the model of referee whom Elleray would favour. Elleray loathes "flash" and Oliver is just about the unflashiest referee on the circuit.

I have met both Oliver and Taylor, both are extremely courteous and dedicated professionals. I would say Oliver's style is quite reserved and very focussed, Taylor's is more outgoing and engaging.

Thank you for those comments Whistleblower.  A very interesting insight.  Your last sentence slightly surprised me initially I must admit.  Would you say Oliver is a little too reserved?   Both talk to players during a game and engage in that sense but Oliver certainly doesn't make a show of it. I'm not suggesting he tries to be something he's not, but showing a little personality can sometimes help I would have thought.  (and I don't mean the Roger Milford variety!)

As for David Elleray, was he one who defended Oliver after the famous penalty and Buffon incident in Madrid?

I would say that the best referees officiate in their own style which carries an integrity within the performance. I am sure both Oliver and Taylor follow this practice which is why they are at the top of their profession.

I think this is true to be at the top of the English game. I do remember listening to Howard Webb speak and talk about how more demonstrative he had to become on the European/World stage and had to work hard on using more gestures, facial expressions and body posture. Taylor IMHO shows more of that in Europe, although I still believe Oliver is the better decision maker

Just a small question.... why is Taylor and his team wearing the FA and the FIFA badge together?

I thought the FIFA badge supercedes the FA badge in the FA cup?

Plus with NHS badge, sponsorship, writing to signify occassion, 2 badges etc all referees will soon have to be Hackett size to allow for space on the shirt😋
