Willard 99-0
Bodenham 97-8 (born Brighton, but based in Cornwall from 1988)
Gunn 93-4
I'm quite sure Martin Bodenham was living in West Sussex for the last few years of his PL career

He was.  He ran a guest house in Looe for a number of years but returned to Sussex-by-the Sea for the end of his refereeing career and for the entirety of his First Class umpiring career.

Steve Tomlin and Clive Penton were Sussex based FL refs at that time, but neither made the very top flight.  They might have progressed in the FA Cup, however, given the FA's occasional appointing eccentricities.

If i remember correctly from a conversation with Martin Bodenham when up in sunny Scarbados, the guest house was in looe a family business.

Can I feel a bit uncomfortable about the appointment of:

1) A Manchester born/based referee for a FA Cup Quarter-Final in Manchester against Manchester United
2) The same referee as we had in the last round

Didn't they have any other referees available?

(PS We haven't had Jarred Gillett for ages)

Im sure this has been gone over multiple times, but as kavanagh supports neither united or city, this shouldn't be an issue.

He also doesn't live in Manchester in any case so isn't based there.  Being born somewhere does not mean you will support the team there. I was not born in Bournemouth yet they have been my team from birth, was taken to my fist game at about 2 weeks old & grew up supporting them. I didn't even move to the area until my 30's.
For my sins i support Aston Villa and have never lived within 120 miles of Villa Park, i could quote that man utd fans are always taunted as coming from London by opposing fans.

Mention of referees officiating their ‘local’ teams and mention of Clive Penton reminded me of a match at the then Madejski Stadium between Reading and Brighton. Mark Cowburn was named as referee with Mr Penton as fourth official.

Mr Cowburn pulled up lame at some point and handed over the whistle. Unfortunately Brighton scored a very controversial goal (can’t remember whether I thought the referee was right or wrong) and after the game Mr Penton’s home location began to be raised and there were all sorts of rumours that he was a Brighton supporter and that his immediate family were season ticket holders there. I’ve no idea if any of that was true.

If my memory serves me right Reading raised the matter with the Football League and got some sort of apology about the appointment although the League was quick to back the referee’s officiating.

I know Steve Tomlin very well… a firefighter by trade.

When I was a young lad he’d always get me autographs of all the officials he worked with.

I have a pristine autograph from Victor Callow when they did a match at Spurs.

Steve also did a cup final at Wembley in 1999 with Heibron.

His work meant that he was early on the scene of the Brighton Bombing in 1984 and helped to rescue a number of the victims.  As a referee he always had a smile on his face and a positive attitude.  His spell on the FL middle was due reward for persistence throughout a long career.  I lined with him and for him on many enjoyable occasions.

No surprise for Craig Pawson, but does that mean Stuart Attwell in the other game is unlikely to get the Final?

For me these appointments suggest that Tierney will get the final

Attwell? He had a shocker in his last game. Good job the game will likely be a walkover. Tierney for the final sadly

Can't see Tierney getting the League Cup and the FA Cup. Simon Hooper maybe. I must admit I thought Attwell was a very firm favourite.

It’s not uncommon for FA cup final referees to have previously refereed the league cup final. It’s unlikely that a referee would do both cup finals in the same season but as Tierney did the league cup final in 2021, that’s not an issue here.

I think it could well be Chris Kavanagh

Who was the last FA Cup Final referee to have not done the EFL Cup final previously?

Attwell and Tierney would be the only options

Could be Kavanagh though but it wouldn't be deserved. Hooper would deserve it.
