Can I feel a bit uncomfortable about the appointment of:

1) A Manchester born/based referee for a FA Cup Quarter-Final in Manchester against Manchester United
2) The same referee as we had in the last round

Didn't they have any other referees available?

(PS We haven't had Jarred Gillett for ages)

Im sure this has been gone over multiple times, but as kavanagh supports neither united or city, this shouldn't be an issue.

He also doesn't live in Manchester in any case so isn't based there.  Being born somewhere does not mean you will support the team there. I was not born in Bournemouth yet they have been my team from birth, was taken to my fist game at about 2 weeks old & grew up supporting them. I didn't even move to the area until my 30's.

Indeed, where a referee is from now should play absolutely zero part in any appointments, it simply isn't relevant.

Apologies for the bold text, not sure where that came from?! I accept location no longer seems to be relevant but what about my second point?

Only the FA Referee Committee can answer that as they did the appointments.

While it's not ideal given there were probably other options from SG1 to choose from, given the comments were very complimentary on here about his performance in that game, it shouldn't be a huge issue.  I doubt he'd have been given this game if he hadn't performed well in Fulham v Leeds.

Doesn't really matter who it is - Bruno Fernandes will surround them for every decision that goes against United anyway. His conduct in the Liverpool and Southampton games was disgraceful, frankly.

I seem to remember Kavanagh generally being praised for his performance in that game so it doesn't seem something to unduly worry about, and I'm not sure it should especially matter that it happens to have been successive rounds. Would you be ok with the appointment if it was for a Fulham PL game this weekend instead?

You're right, his performance in the previous round against Leeds was excellent but I thought the idea was to mix things up. Many times I see posts about having the same referee often/never getting certain refs. As TTFL/Craven would concur, Jarred Gillett and Michael Oliver have literally been excellent every time we've had them, so can we have them every match please?

To follow on from the Sussex ref thread, there are/have been several Manchester-ish refs in SG1, but there aren't any London refs at this level or have been for many years?

Willard 99-0
Bodenham 97-8 (born Brighton, but based in Cornwall from 1988)
Gunn 93-4

One of my earliest moans, long before RTR unfortunately (fortunately for you all), Martin Bodenham (who I never rated), being based in Looe and refereeing Plymouth v. Fulham

I'm quite sure Martin Bodenham was living in West Sussex for the last few years of his PL career
