EFL Trophy Final - 2019-20 & 2020-21
« on: Tue 16 Feb 2021 12:00 »
It seems that this game, held over from last season, will be played on Saturday 13th March with the 2020/21 Final to be played the following day. As a reminder, the appointed officials for 2019/20 are below:

Referee - Carl Boyeson
Assistant Referees - Michael Webb and Craig Taylor
Fourth Official - Charles Breakspear
Reserve Assistant Referee - George Byrne

Congratulations to all of those appointed to the finals. I am especially pleased for Breakspear...he seems to attract a lot of unfair criticism on this board IMO. Every time I’ve seen him he is a decisive official who gets most things bang on, is very consistent and doesn’t shirk the big calls. I hope the day goes well for all concerned, and do wonder if this is a sign of impending promotion for Charles, much like Whitestone the last time Sunderland reached the final?

Yes, congrats to Charles and his team and hope you have a good game. I could be wrong, but I think he is the first Surrey referee to take charge of a major Trophy Final since Ray Lewis refereed the League Cup Final thirty years ago in 1990/91. Given that some of the long-serving FL refs such as Salisbury Sr, Boyeson and Drysdale were obviously not eligible this time, I was going to suggest someone like Charles, up-and-coming but not perhaps in the top bracket, a bit like Whitestone and Woolmer who both refereed the EFL Final and went on to become SG2 refs. I wish Charles well for the future and hope that all our post-match comments on him are positive. I am sure they will be.

A day out on the boards at Wembley for Mr Kettle  ;D

That was also the case for Gavin Ward the season prior to Dean Whitestone's final.

Although previously from Kent, I presume that we can count Ward as a Surrey referee ?

Congratulations to all.

Will the winner of the 2020 final be the shortest ever holders of a trophy?

Will Mike Dean be at Wembley to see his fellow card shark and beloved Tranmere in action I wonder? Depite the ban on fans attending, I wouldn't put it past him to be there in some capacity.

Portsmouth could get that record along with being the longest holders of the FA Cup (1939-46).  Although something rather important happened instead between those years.

A bit from the local BBC featuring Carl Boyeson's cup final appointment tomorrow.  Clearly disappointing for his family to miss out on his big day.

Boyeson has done extremely well. I understand quite a few seasons back he was dangerously near the foot of the National List table but has certainly turned his performances around to become a very safe pair of hands at League 1 and League 2 level. Seen him live a couple of times, once memorably at Accrington Stanley on one of the worst pitches I've seen since the 1970s. I hope he has an excellent match on the lusher turf of Wembley.

Boyeson and his 4th Official, Trevor Kettle have,  between them, totted up 37 years on the National List ( or its equivalent ) Whatever else they are, they are survivors.
