At a time when controversy needed to be avoided, mainstream media reporting the opposition by Newcastle fans of Cootes appointment, due to his "previous" love for Man Utd.

His previous decisions involving the two clubs along with the fact he is Manchester FA and that he has a fake photo of Old Trafford supposedly on his Facebook page doesn't help. He really shouldn't have this game in fact its a joke that he does.

With all this talk about Lee Mason being incompetent, Coote is even worse.

From what I've heard, the fake Old Trafford picture stuff is, well, fake, in that there's no substance to it.

What controversial decisions has Coote been involved in in Manchester United and Newcastle United matches? I recall some criticism over the Chelsea V Newcastle game last season.

Yeah a penalty call and possible red card.

I’d say it was more the VAR on the day who failed to sent Coote to the screen.

Also Coote needing VAR to send Sanchez off after bringing Wilson down while in on goal. Giving a soft penalty that day.

In terms of United there is the west brom game in the locdown year when he wrongly overturned his own penalty decision. Then gave United a lucky penalty. Also, I believe he VAR when Fernandes stood on Konsa and won a penalty.
