Community Shield 2022
« on: Tue 05 Jul 2022 14:21 »
Craig Pawson and his team of match officials have been appointed as the match referee for the 2022 FA Community Shield between Liverpool and Manchester City.

This year's traditional season curtain-raiser between the winners of the Emirates FA Cup and the Premier League is being staged at the King Power Stadium in Leicester on Saturday 30 July, with a kick-off time at 5pm BST.

And after refereeing the Cup Final in May, which saw Liverpool beat Chelsea at Wembley Stadium, Pawson will now open the 2022-23 season by taking charge of this game.

The full team of officials for the match are now confirmed below:-

Referee: Craig Pawson (Sheffield and Hallamshire FA)
Assistant referees: Harry Lennard (Sussex FA) and Nick Hopton (Derbyshire FA)
Fourth official: Darren England (Sheffield & Hallam FA)
Reserve assistant referee: Tim Wood (Gloucestershire FA)
VAR (Video assistant referee): John Brooks   (Leicestershire FA)
Assistant VAR: Lee Betts (Norfolk FA)

The FA need to realise that the season opens earlier that weekend.

Excellent appointment for Craig, Very happy with him for the game. Surprising to see him again though as he only just did the fa cup final and has already had a community shield final.

Kavanagh for the EFL cup final and Tierney for the fa by guess for this season.

Chris Kavanagh may have been slightly disadvantaged in terms of these appointments by being involved in the woman’s Euros

Congratulations to Craig and his team a slightly odd and unexpected appointment but a deserved one. Have many other referees done this game twice? Or directly after the FA cup final?

Also interesting that John Brooks gets the VAR appointment having only done the job a handful of times.

I think for a long time it was the case that a referee only did the Community Shield once, at least in my time following football. But I think there's been a couple of times recently where someone's got it a second time. I think Martin Atkinson might have got it again a few years ago?

I'm not quite sure what you mean about Brooks as VAR. He has certainly done more than a handful of games in that role and I seem to recall he did plenty of big games as VAR towards the end of last season.
