Just seen the highlights of an entertaining Final on Quest and didn't look as though there was too much wrong with the officiating. Suggestion earlier that Dean Whitestone was being 'lenient' but this was not really borne out on the highlights and certainly nothing controversial seen over 120 minutes + penalties. So well done Dean and team

Having watched the game, I must say all 3 teams contributed to an entertaining encounter. It yet again highlights my gripe with the system - so what Dean isn’t a full time official, but he’s certainly one of the best we have. Surely teams would rather have decent officials that aren’t full time?

I believe Dean has made it clear he wishes to remain part-time due to his successful career outside football.

Fair enough, he has a most important and very specialised job. In that case, why then insist that all Championship and PL games must go to SG referees? Could not some arrangement be put in place for non full time referees to take some of these appointments? Certainly Whitestone regularly puts in much better performances than some on SG2.

Some years ago a special arrangement was made for David Elleray to continue refereeing in the top flight while not being a full time official and retaining his profession in the fiels of education. I fail to see why similar bespoke arrangements cannot be made now to ensure that the best referees are used. As m'learned friend nemesis reminds us, it isn't that SG2 is so overflowing with talent that they are justified in shutting out better referees who would not go full time.

To be fair there are a couple who still pursue their careers in both SG1 and 2.

It may be he doesn't want the added pressure and time involved that this brings given what his job is, the stress involved in that and working shifts.

Speculation of course, but understandable if true.

I absolutely agree.

As I've said before, I think that each individual referee's performance level is probably enhanced if they are able to devote most of their time to that rather than if they are having to combine it with many other commitments.

However, it does not necessarily follow that every referee who is able to go full-time will be better than those who only do it part-time.

I would much rather have a part-time Dean Whitestone refereeing Championship games than a full-time Andy Davies/Andy Woolmer/Keith Stroud (these days) and many more - and Whitestone has refereed plenty of Championship games before so presumably he would be happy to officiate at that level if given the chance at the very least, even if he didn't want the pressures of refereeing in the Premier League.

Well as a supporter of the beaten finalists Sunderland AFC I cannot criticise the performance of Dean Whitestone at all...……..the biggest compliment I could give was I almost forgot he was there.
