Fair enough, he has a most important and very specialised job. In that case, why then insist that all Championship and PL games must go to SG referees? Could not some arrangement be put in place for non full time referees to take some of these appointments? Certainly Whitestone regularly puts in much better performances than some on SG2.

Some years ago a special arrangement was made for David Elleray to continue refereeing in the top flight while not being a full time official and retaining his profession in the fiels of education. I fail to see why similar bespoke arrangements cannot be made now to ensure that the best referees are used. As m'learned friend nemesis reminds us, it isn't that SG2 is so overflowing with talent that they are justified in shutting out better referees who would not go full time.

I absolutely agree.

As I've said before, I think that each individual referee's performance level is probably enhanced if they are able to devote most of their time to that rather than if they are having to combine it with many other commitments.

However, it does not necessarily follow that every referee who is able to go full-time will be better than those who only do it part-time.

I would much rather have a part-time Dean Whitestone refereeing Championship games than a full-time Andy Davies/Andy Woolmer/Keith Stroud (these days) and many more - and Whitestone has refereed plenty of Championship games before so presumably he would be happy to officiate at that level if given the chance at the very least, even if he didn't want the pressures of refereeing in the Premier League.
