England or Wales?
« on: Fri 07 Jan 2022 21:06 »
An interesting piece on the BBC NW News tonight about Chester FC whose ground is partly in England and partly in Wales. Apparently the Welsh government are not happy that CFC have been admitting fans to their recent games in an English league, in contravention of Covid restrictions in Wales but not in England. A bit of a dilemma and I wonder how they're going to solve it, particularly bearing in mind that the pitch and most of the stands are in Wales!

If there was an incident at the ground would Welsh or English emergency services attend?

Good question because, according  to reports, they are policed by the Cheshire Police Force. Perhaps the club should be charging the Welsh for the cost of policing if the Welsh won't do the job.
Referee's decision used to be final!

Yes, that is correct. The ground has a 'CH' (Chester, England) postcode, so is policed by the Cheshire Police Force, presumably with some financial arrangement with the Welsh Police. I assume the same applies to the other emergency services + such things as utilities and rubbish collection.

Doesn't this story just expose the nonsense of having different rules for different parts of the (devolved) United Kingdom?

COVID-19 does not respect the boundary between England and Wales and the rules should be the same.  A further daft layer of local government we probably could all do without paying for.

The club play in England, their offices are registered in England, the ground is located in an England postcode, so for me legally, the club is in England. Typical government sticking their nose in and creating a big issues when there isnt one

Postcodes bear no relation to national or local authority boundaries. Aberystwyth, for example, has an SY (Shrewsbury) postcode, whereas some parts of Shropshire are LD (Llandrindod Wells). The argument about the location of offices, however, does seem to carry weight. As far as emergency services are concerned, is it possible to reach the ground by road from Wales without going through England?
